Of those. Some say that the prior exists. If things do not exist, how do seeing and so on change? Therefore, before those, the thing that abides is there. Seeing and hearing and so on, and feeling and so on, of themselves. What thing abides before? By what is that designated? Even without seeing and so on, if that is a changed state, even without that, there is no doubt that those will become existent. What illuminates what? What illuminates what? Where is what without what? Where is what without what? Of all seeing and so on, what is not there before? Among seeing and so on, another illuminates at the time of another. Of all seeing and so on, if there is no prior existence, how is that prior existence of each seeing and so on? The seer is the same as the hearer. If the feeler is also the same, if there is a prior existence of each, then that is not reasonable. If the seer is different, the hearer is different, and the feeler is different, when the seer exists, he becomes the hearer, and I also become many. Seeing and hearing and so on, and feeling and so on, and the origin from which they change, that is also not there. Seeing and hearing and so on, and feeling and so on, if there is no owner of what, those are also not there. What is before seeing and so on is not now or later. The thoughts of whether it exists or not will change. The ninth chapter is called Examining What Abides Before. If whatever firewood is fire, the agent and the action become one. If fire is different from wood, it will arise even without wood. It will always become burning. It does not arise from the cause of burning, and the action becomes meaningless. If that is the case, there is no action, because it does not depend on others. It does not arise from the cause of burning. If it is always burning, the action becomes meaningless. If one thinks that the burning firewood is thought of, when that much is that, by what does that firewood burn? Because it does not meet another, if there is no meeting, it will not burn, and if it does not burn, it will not die, and if it does not die, it will remain with its own characteristics. How a woman

Just as what is born, and the born also meet with a woman. If fire is other than wood, then it can meet with wood. If fire and wood, one eliminates the other, even if fire is indeed different from wood, it depends on whether one wants to meet with wood. If wood depends on fire, if fire depends on wood, then which of the fire and wood that are depended upon, which is established first? If wood depends on fire, then it becomes establishing the established fire. For the wood to be burned, it will also become a state without fire. If a thing is established by depending on something, and also depends on itself, if the thing that is depended upon is established, then depending on what is something established? Whatever thing is established by dependence, if it is not established, how does it depend? If it is said that it depends after it is established, then that is not reasonable. There is no fire that depends on wood, and there is no fire that does not depend on wood. There is no wood that depends on fire, and there is no wood that does not depend on fire. Fire does not come from elsewhere, and there is no fire in wood either. Similarly, the remainder of wood is shown by measuring what has gone and not gone. Wood itself is not fire, and there is no fire other than wood. Fire is not combined with wood, there is no wood in fire, there it is not. Mother and wood, and the order of self and closeness, together with vases and so on, have all been explained in detail. Those who show self and things, and their own and others that contain them, do not think that they are proficient in the meaning of what is shown. The treatise called Examination of Fire and Firewood, is the tenth chapter. When asked if the prior limit is seen, the Great Sage Shakyamuni Buddha said no. Samsara has no beginning and no end, therefore there is no before and no after. For something that has no beginning and no end, where is the middle? Therefore, for it, before and after and simultaneous order are not reasonable. If birth is before and old age and death are after, then there will be no birth, no old age, no death, and birth even before death. If birth is after and old age and death are before, then how can old age and death without birth arise without a cause? Birth and old age and death cannot exist simultaneously, because one will die while being born, and both will become causeless. For things that have no before, after, and simultaneous order,
