The emptiness of the nature of form is the very emptiness of ultimate reality. Because there is no ultimate emptiness apart from the emptiness of the nature of form, emptiness is also called form. The emptiness of ultimate reality is a synonym for the nature of the emptiness of form. How does the emptiness of form manifest as ultimate emptiness? As the noble inexhaustible wisdom has taught: Although the realm of the wisdom of a Bodhisattva entering the realm of phenomena is the realm of earth, water, fire, and wind, the realm of phenomena is not characterized by hardness, moisture, warmth, or motion. The realm of phenomena is the same as all phenomena. Why is that? Because it is the same in emptiness, it is said to be the same. Therefore, it should be understood that the emptiness of form is the very emptiness of ultimate reality. If divided into two, there is the saying of the emptiness of form. There are three kinds of form: the completely imputed form, the conceptually imputed form, and the form of suchness. Among them, the ordinary beings who conceive of earth and so on as having the characteristic of solidity are the completely imputed form. The form that is the object of the conceptually knowing consciousness that corresponds to meaning is the conceptually imputed form. The characteristic of suchness, which is free from the completely imputed form and the conceptually imputed form, is the form of suchness. Because there is no completely imputed form or conceptually imputed form in the form of suchness, it is called the emptiness of form. If one wonders whether the emptiness of the form of suchness exists apart from the conceptually imputed form and the completely imputed form, it is said that emptiness is form, meaning that the emptiness of the form of suchness has the same nature as the conceptually imputed form and the completely imputed form. Whatever is form is emptiness. Emptiness is also form. There is no emptiness apart from form, because the emptiness of the nature of form and ultimate emptiness are not different, so it is said that there is no emptiness apart from form. Why is there no difference? Because it is free from addition and subtraction, free from the two extremes of existence and non-existence.

Because its essence is no different from the characteristic of emptiness. What is called "form is emptiness" means that whatever the characteristic of form is, the characteristic of emptiness is also that. What is called "emptiness is form" means that whatever the characteristic of emptiness is, the characteristic of form is also that. This shows that miserable, foolish sentient beings have been wandering in the cycle of birth and death in the five paths since beginningless time. They are familiar with the five aggregates and accustomed to the eighteen elements, so they are attached to and infatuated with them, and they grasp them as real objects and aggregates. The Tathagata taught that their essence is empty. If the characteristic of form is broken down into emptiness, then clinging to emptiness as an antidote is the attachment of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas to the one-sided peace of Nirvana. For example, "form is emptiness" is said to be the antidote to separate from the edge of samsara for those who are attached to form and fall into samsara. "Emptiness is form" is said to be the antidote for the Shravakas who, after realizing selflessness, generate the sign of emptiness after breaking down form into emptiness, and thus fall into the edge of Nirvana. If the emptiness of form is something to be abandoned, then in order to abandon the grasping at the sign of form, if emptiness is taught, and if a mind that grasps at the sign of emptiness arises, then both emptiness and form will be abandoned. A sign obscures the realization of whatever it points to, so grasping at emptiness as a real thing is also a sign. This is like a person with blurred vision going to a feast. On the right side of the road there are thorns and holes, and on the left side of the road there are cliffs and abysses. If a person with perfect eyesight says, "There are thorns and holes," then he will fall into the cliffs and abysses. If he says, "There are cliffs and abysses," then he will fall into the thorns and holes. Therefore, he shows the ease of not clinging to the middle of the road, and thus reaches his destination. This analogy is saying that "blurred vision" refers to ordinary people and Shravakas who are obscured by the obscurations of afflictions.
