For the sake of truth, and because of equality with the characteristic of being without characteristics as one characteristic, and if it is said that all dharmas are truly seen, (the Buddha) then declared: Form is emptiness. Because it is the occasion, it should be connected with phrases such as "by its own nature." In this way, those who say that things that appear as form, etc., are real and those who say they are nominal, will understand in these two ways. Among them, those who say that things that appear as form, etc., are real are the Sarvastivadins and Sautrantikas, etc. Those who say that the meaning that appears is nominal are the Sautrantikas, and they say that the meaning, such as blue, etc., exists outside, and the experience is the aspect that is meditated on in this consciousness. For blue, etc., to conceive of its own nature, such as atoms and parts composed of atoms, consciousness, the self, the permanence of sound, etc., are completely transformed, and all these evil nets of discrimination will be destroyed by negating self-nature, so it should be declared. Those forms that are clearly visible even to cowherds and women are empty of self-nature like a mirage, because this visible form has no self-nature. Therefore, this emptiness of self-nature is called form, which shows that the form accepted by the Sarvastivadins and Sautrantikas, etc., is empty of its own nature. The Sautrantikas believe that appearance is the nature of consciousness, so things that appear as blue, etc., are empty of the nature of meaning. If someone thinks that the meaning of the external object exists, so form is different from emptiness, then this will also be refuted by "form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from form," etc. Also, if someone asks: How can we know that the nature of the aggregates, etc., does not exist? Here is the answer: The aggregates, ayatanas, and dhatus are interdependent, so they exclude the basis of causelessness and permanence. In the aspect of arising from cause, there are also two kinds of permanence, namely things...

When arising, does it arise simultaneously with the cause, or at a different time? Regarding this, if it is like the first case, then all aspects of cause and effect, before and after, will appear simultaneously, and the two, cause and effect, will be inseparable, and the kalpa will also become only about one year. If it is like the second case, since the two, cause and effect, do not gather at the same time, there is no ability, therefore it will become without cause. If there is no cause, then it will become either permanent or non-existent, because there is no other dependence. If there is dependence, then things will become sometimes existent and sometimes non-existent. The third case is impossible, because the simultaneous and the different time exist mutually exclusive. Therefore, all appearances such as form are empty of their own nature, like water in a mirage. For them, all discriminations that arise depending on this and that are conventional truths. Therefore, the Bhagavan said in the "Great Play Sutra": "The son of the Shakya sees the law of dependent origination, its own nature is non-existent like the sky, the mind is extremely compatible with wisdom, seeing the partisan does not move." Also, the "Ratnamegha Sutra" also said: "Born from conditions is not truly born, the Dharmakaya is the body of all Buddhas, the Dharma nature is permanent like the sky, if it can be declared, purity will be obtained." It is also said in this way. It is also said in the Ornament of Wisdom Light Entering the Realm of All Buddhas: "There is no movement from the nature of Dharma. Not moving from the nature of Dharma, then the nature of Dharma will be obtained. Obtaining the nature of Dharma, then there is no elaboration at all. What is the reason for this? Because it is produced by cause and condition. Whatever is produced by cause and condition is extremely unborn. Whatever is extremely unborn is definitely obtained. Whatever is definitely obtained is not practicing while existing simultaneously with the intention of all Dharmas." And so on. Therefore, the noble Nagarjuna also said: "Whatever arises by dependent origination, its own nature is that."
