Generosity and so on arise from correct views, therefore they greatly please the wise, and not others. Because not engaging in generosity and so on leads to a lack of merit, it is not that generosity and so on are considered to be completely non-existent, because their existence in conventional truth has been acknowledged. In the state of non-meditation, because one focuses on things as being like illusions, it is not that there is no focus at all. Even at that time, one still establishes a focus that arises from aspiration. In the state of meditation, there is only complete non-focus, because at that time one does not acknowledge engaging in generosity and so on. In the initial state of engagement, one should not fault those who are rising up with actions. This speaks of the vastness of engaging in the perfections, because of the great fruit. By closely showing the entities of cause and effect in conventional truth, it also becomes a prevention against the extreme of denigration. In three ways, merit is like the sky: it is all-pervasive, vast, and inexhaustible. Because it generates worldly and transworldly merit, it is all-pervasive. Worldly merit is generated in the state of non-meditation. Transworldly merit is in the state of meditation. Because it goes into distinction and becomes distinct, it is vast. Because it will not be exhausted until the end of samsara, it is inexhaustible. If, because of the absence of that, one should give generosity without abiding in form, then how should a Bodhisattva who desires to attain the Form Body of the Thus-Gone One (梵文,Tathāgata) engage in generosity and so on? Fearing such a refutation, the passage beginning with "Subhuti, what do you think?" shows the place of desiring to attain the Form Body. Here, in essence, it eliminates the aspect of the characteristic of pride in manifesting the Form Body as the Thus-Gone One that is incompatible. "Perfect with signs" merely expresses the signs completely, thereby completely showing the Form Body of the Thus-Gone One, adorned with all the signs and excellent marks. Among these, the signs are the thirty-two signs, such as having wheels on the hands and feet, etc., fearing too many words.

Please understand it as it is stated in the Sutra of Non-Written Words. Those are also perfect due to abiding in the place, clarity, and completeness. The eighty minor marks of excellence, such as nails resembling the color of red copper, etc., please understand them as they are stated in the sutra. Those marks and so on are also false, like the marks of a Buddha manifested by illusion. Therefore, it is taught that one should abide with desire and aspiration for such a form of the body. Like this, are those marks the nature of accumulated subtle particles, or a form with limbs created by it? For the time being, the first case is not true, because the subtle particles have already been broken down. The second is also not true. If there is no creator, then there is no form with limbs created by it, and the contradictory dharmas such as obscurations, which have been previously stated, are the objects of perception. Therefore, the intention is explained from what was said, and after examining this, Subhuti said, "It is not so." If the marks are false, then why did the Blessed One speak of the marks in those sutras? Thinking, "What is this for?" When asked, "What is this for?" the answer was, "It is because there is no perfection of marks." The perfection of marks is not spoken of in the ultimate sense, but like a Buddha manifested by illusion, it only speaks of its false nature, this is a concluding word. In order for the Blessed One to approve of the meaning spoken by the noble Subhuti, he spoke of "how much" and so on. How much is the perfection of marks? From the ultimate point of view, how much attachment there is to the appearance of the perfection of marks, that much is attachment to the inverted appearance, this is a concluding word. As shown before. How much there is no perfection of marks, it should be understood in reverse. This shows how one should practice here by entering into meditative equipoise in yoga. This shows how one should abandon the two extremes and properly grasp the mind here, like that, like a Buddha manifested by illusion, to see the Tathagata by the marks.
