From the (sutra): Just as forms in a mirror, are devoid of one and other, although they appear, they are not present there. Likewise, the nature of all phenomena, if examined with intelligence, the nature is unattainable. Therefore, they are said to be inexpressible, and it is also said that nature is without essence. Thus it is said. Similarly, in the Holy Samadhiraja Sutra, it is also said: For example, in the trunk of a moist tree, even if someone who desires the heartwood gradually dissects it, there is no heartwood either inside or outside. Likewise, know that all phenomena are like that. Thus it is said. Therefore, it is better not to regard all things as illusory, so do not be so attached, but give alms. Because it does not abide in things, so it is not such a reason, which is logical here. In this way, just like the practice of giving and so on, it has been fully demonstrated how to combine them, not in other ways. If, from the ultimate point of view, since there is nothing, it is impossible to give alms without abiding in things, then should one be attached to giving alms to non-things? Therefore, the sutra says: Do not abide in anything. Bodhisattvas should also abandon the discrimination of the non-existence of things, because if there is no attachment to things, then there will be no non-existence. In the conventional truth, there are things to be given and givers, etc. Therefore, it is also unreasonable to think that attachment to the non-existence of things is also unreasonable. By "not abiding in form," etc., the Bodhisattva does not abide in where to give alms, which is explained in detail. The word "dharma" in the sutra refers to the place of origin of dharma. Because this place of origin is a broad expression, the inner places of origin such as the eye are not mentioned. In order to show that one should not discriminate against non-birth, etc., therefore, it is said, "Subhuti, how," etc. A sign is the characteristic of a thing itself, that is, a mark. That is, non-birth, etc. Understanding of this is consciousness. Non-discrimination of this is not abiding in it. This shows that one does not abide in anything. Or, all of these also show the profoundness from this, as well as imputation.

It also shows the refutation of slander and denial. For those with objects of focus, this view prevents the complete accumulation of merit and wisdom. Therefore, because of wanting to make offerings and benefit, what is given generates great joy, but not by abiding in the non-apprehension of the object of giving, the giver, and the receiver. If so, because of non-existence, are the objects of giving, etc., non-apprehensible, or because there is no object? The first case is that because no one gives anything, it would lead to no merit. Because sentient beings do not exist, the complete effort made by bodhisattvas for the benefit of sentient beings would also be meaningless. Therefore, it is not just non-existence. The Blessed One sees the objects of giving, etc., so it is not without an object. If it were not so, then for desires, how would the Blessed One completely give up sons, etc.? Having kept all these rebuttals in mind, then, when asked, "Why?" the answer is, "Subhuti, any bodhisattva," etc. The meaning is that giving, etc., arising from the correct view, because it is completely pure, will accomplish a satisfying and particularly excellent result, but not from arising from a reversed view. Just like the branches of discipline, etc., arising from a wrong view. The objects of giving, etc., as mentioned before, because there is nothing, clinging to them is completely reversed, just like clinging to water in a mirage. Therefore, all the ways of the perfections arising from that, like giving, etc., arising from the reversal of self and what belongs to self, because they arise from an impure cause, are of little power. The non-apprehension of the objects of giving, etc., which have become objects of focus, is not reversed because it is an object in the true sense, just like clinging to water in a mirage. Therefore, because it arises from a cause of increase, the result of giving, etc., arising from that is great, just like the sprouts, etc., accomplished from a healthy seed. Therefore, abiding in the non-apprehension of
