It is not realization. Like this, going to a distant place and asking those in authority, for those who cannot go there, determining the meaning of the sutras will be delayed for a long time. Where the name of the retinue is not specified, who should be asked? Now, based on which retinue belongs to the teachings, it is mentioned that they are with the great Sangha of a thousand monks, etc. Here, too, it is because the previously indicated retinue of monks was small. The later indicated retinue of Bodhisattvas is large. For example, it is like saying all beings, learners, non-learners, and solitary realizers, etc. Others say that because the retinue is constant, the retinue of monks was mentioned first. Because they have overcome afflictions, they are monks. Those who enter to merely exhaust afflictions belong to the Hearer Vehicle, or do they not belong to the Great Vehicle? This seven-hundred verse text is definitely a very concise Great Vehicle. For this text that exhausts the supreme meaning, how can Hearers, etc., other than those of the Bodhisattva lineage, belong here? If someone asks why the Hearer retinue is indicated, there is no fault, because this meaning comes from the Twenty-Five Thousand Verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, which was asked by Maitreya and taught by the Tathagata: There are three types of beings. Among them, some beings initially seek the vast and excellent Dharma and are able to comprehend the vast Dharma. Some initially seek inferior Dharma and comprehend inferior Dharma. But they are not satisfied with just that, and again seek superior and vast Dharma, and are also able to comprehend it. Some only seek inferior Dharma and comprehend inferior Dharma. They are satisfied with just that and do not seek superior and vast Dharma, which is shown to have entered one side of peace. Those who, even having attained Hearer Bodhi, are not satisfied with just that, but generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete Bodhi, and are not controlled by karma and afflictions, but completely transform into Bodhi, and by the power of aspiration, accomplish one rebirth after another, thereby...

One perfects the accumulation of merit in Bodhi. Showing that he is of the Śrāvaka lineage is for the sake of initially seeking his Bodhi. In the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, it is also said, "I speak of them as being of the Bodhisattva lineage by various names." Śāriputra and others should also be regarded as such. Therefore, they are vessels for hearing this and so forth. Those who have Bodhi in mind or whose minds are directed towards Bodhi are Bodhisattvas. Because they possess a great mind, great renunciation, and great realization, they are Mahāsattvas (Great Bodhisattvas). In order to perfect the six pāramitās, they possess extraordinary diligence, therefore they are those who have donned great armor. It is taught thus: each of the six, such as giving, contains six aspects, and what is the diligence of armor among them? It is that which possesses six aspects, as previously stated. By non-retrogression, it is shown that one has obtained forbearance of non-arising dharmas, because it is distinguished by great armor. Without obtaining forbearance of non-arising dharmas, the pāramitās cannot become great. For situations such as those corresponding to the aspects of ascertainment, non-retrogression is not appropriate. As it is said: The warm stage, the peak stage, forbearance, and those who abide in the supreme dharma, with these twenty signs, one does not regress from Bodhi. The signs of non-retrogression are considered to be abiding in the path of seeing. And so forth, it is taught. There are many kinds of dawn, such as towering, yellow, red, and like the color of the sun. Here, because it comes before the time, it is considered early. The dawn should be regarded as towering, because it appears earliest of all things, and because there is no difference, it is a collection of all things. It is taught thus: Initially, the starlight fades, the sky appears blue-yellow, the earliest color and light appear in the east, that is the towering dawn rising. That rising is that appearing. The time signified by it is the time, and when that time comes, that is the time when the first drum is beaten at night. Therefore
