It becomes. Therefore, if asked how it itself is divided into many forms? The truth is that due to the differences in the minds of Bodhisattvas, etc., it becomes many different forms, but not in its own essence. Here, a Bodhisattva who is fully engaged in contemplating emptiness should think like this: If all dharmas are empty, then what is the "self" mentioned in "one's own self is one's own protector, and the actions done by oneself"? One should think like this. First, grasp the internal dharmas, such as form and feeling, and contemplate them, and one does not see anything that can be expressed by the sound called "self" as truly existing in the ultimate sense. Therefore, for the sake of the meaning of the profound "self" spoken of by outsiders, one should contemplate the absence of a person. For those who believe in the profound internal sources here, for their sake, one should contemplate the non-existence of internal sources, and therefore, for the sake of both, it is internal emptiness. Therefore, a person is shown in the manner of self. Similarly, in the way that the ear and so on are shown, emptiness is shown in some way through the absence of self of a person. In some instances, through "the eye is empty by the eye, the ear is empty by the ear," and so on, through the absence of self of dharmas, therefore it should be explained as in both cases. There are four ways to examine the eye: the eye itself is the self; I am the one with the eye; there is self in the eye; and there is eye in the self. The eye itself is the self, this is grasping the eye as the self. The three, such as I am the one with the eye, are grasping the eye as belonging to the self. Therefore, these four ways of grasping, by not observing the eye and by knowing as it is, are frightened, fully and correctly understood, and one sees accordingly that "the eye is empty of self and what belongs to self." Similarly, for the ear and so on, this is the internal emptiness achieved through the absence of self of a person. Through the absence of self of dharmas, there are three types of eyes: the imputed eye, the conceptual eye, and the eye of suchness.
