Nor can it be established as another dharma. Therefore, Nirvana and cessation, and all compounded things being pacified, etc., are expressed by causes. However, if it exists, why is there no Nirvana, why do the arising of compounded things not occur? Therefore, if it is said that there is Nirvana, a dharma that prevents the arising of those others, this is not reasonable, because the so-called Nirvana of compounded things does not exist at all, because for permanent dharmas, they never change at any time. For impermanent dharmas, even a little, there is no arising. Therefore, for dharmas that do not arise by their own nature, Nirvana does not do anything at all. However, if it changes again, will it hinder the arising of other compounded things in its continuum? That is also non-existent, because the afflictions and the seeds of the aggregates of the supramundane path are all burned away, so they will not arise again. For dharmas that do not arise by their own nature, the term Nirvana is used. Therefore, even according to the view of the Hearers' Vehicle, the so-called Nirvana is not another dharma, let alone the view of the Emptiness Vehicle? Because there is no Nirvana, the absence of the nature of not abandoning virtue, etc., which relies on it, is called the Emptiness of Non-abandonment. How is it said in the Bhagavati Mother Sutra? Subhuti, whatever merit the Bodhisattvas accumulate is also called Emptiness. Therefore, it is precisely because of it that the general Emptiness of virtuous dharmas, and the Emptiness of the nature of non-abandonment, etc., are proclaimed. As it is said in the sutra: In the Emptiness of virtuous dharmas, that action is not mixed, that is so, permanence is that difference, where is that in Emptiness. Again, the Bodhisattva should thus think: If all dharmas are Emptiness, then the nature of sentient beings, the dharmas of desire, etc., and the nature of sentient beings.

Thoughts such as desire and habitual tendencies, as well as particular affections, and the wisdom of lineage, etc., those will not become wisdom. If asked, by what causes do the Buddhas know thoughts and habitual tendencies, and know the various particular affections, etc., and enter into what is called the Dharma of the Buddhas? Answer: One should think again in this way: These dharmas should not be said to be other dharmas. Because these are the temporary differences that occur in the mind stream. Therefore, these are not other dharmas, and this is the emptiness of self-nature. If it is said that lineage should be spoken of, that is because it is the main thing. Because of the purity of lineage, Bodhisattvas enter as much as possible. Among them, from the eye sense base to the mind sense base, the distinctions of the six sense bases, which have been established since beginningless time, are said to be lineage. However, there, compassion and wisdom themselves are the main things, extremely pure, accomplishing the benefit of beings as much as possible, therefore, the nature of compassion and wisdom is said to be the lineage of the Bodhisattvas. Bhagavati, here, whatever is said to be the emptiness of consciousness itself, that itself also shows the emptiness of self-nature. As it is said: In the emptiness of the inner self-nature, there is also the emptiness of self-nature, the lineage of the nature of consciousness, is desired to be the nature of compassion and wisdom. Thus it is said. Again, one should think in this way, whatever are these characteristics of the dharmas, the characteristic of becoming form is form, the characteristic of experiencing is feeling, etc. If those exist, then do form, etc., also exist? Answer: One should determine again in this way: If these characteristics are different from the basis of characteristics, then those will also arise earlier than the basis of characteristics. At that time, the basis of characteristics is without characteristics, and it arises later, so what is the use of characteristics? Or, if they are later characteristics, then before the characteristics arise, the basis of characteristics is without characteristics.

Therefore, what is the use of these characteristics later on? However, when characteristics and substrates exist simultaneously, for those who have not previously seen them separately, because there is no distinction such as "this is the substrate, and this is also the characteristic," the substrate becomes a state without characteristics. However, if the substrate and characteristics are not different, then what is there to say about the substrate and characteristics at that time? Because the substrate is not established, and because it is not different from it, the characteristics will also not be established. As it is said: If the characteristic is different from the substrate, if the substrate becomes without characteristics, without otherness, there are none of those. You have clearly explained. The substrate is liberated by the characteristic, abandoning the expression of language, your eye of wisdom, sees this world as peaceful. Therefore, the so-called characteristics are also completely examined by the completely examined Dharma, which is the emptiness of self-nature. The thirty-two major marks of a great being of the Buddhas, what do Bodhisattvas strive for, and for those, Bodhisattvas also contemplate the emptiness of self-nature in order to abandon the view of substantiality. These three emptinesses should be understood as being taught by the Blessed One himself, who showed in the sutras that form and other dharmas are without self-nature. As it is said: Form and so on are without, and its body, the characteristic of existence is destruction, the meaning is understanding. Again, one should think like this: if all dharmas are non-existent, then powers and fearlessness, etc., will not exist. Compassion and generosity, etc., the dharmas of the Bodhisattva, will also not exist, then what will one strive for in order to obtain? Therefore, pure dharmas exist. If it exists, will it also be generated by the afflicted dharmas? Again, it should be determined that if there is some ultimate truth Dharma, then it will become permanent. Because the dharmas of change and transformation are not the reason for ultimate truth. Of those, what is not inverted as this very truth and ultimate truth?
