It is called silence. If he says, "I have" or says, "I do not have," then he is lying to himself. Because of the fear of lying when asked a question, and the fear of the possibility of not knowing, the statement "I do not know" will not be clearly stated. Even so, he will attain mental distraction through words such as "neither is it so nor is it otherwise." Another teaching is like this: Because I do not know, what kind of fruition will ripen for actions done well and actions done poorly, or will there be none? When he is asked by others, because he is not skilled in his own understanding, fearing the fear of questioning and the fear of wrong views, he will not clearly state it, but will attain mental distraction through words such as "neither is it so." The third is taught like this: I do not know what is good and what is not good. If I knew what is good and what is not good, then the renunciates or Brahmins in the world, the wise and sharp debaters, would refute me, and I would be mentally distressed by their questions, and because of the fear of questioning, just like before, he will attain mental distraction through speech. Because of all ignorance, in all cases, he will not clearly state what is the path to excellence, what is the absolutely correct path, what is the question about suffering and its origin, their cessation, and the path, not even being skilled in the letters, I am ignorant, but instead asks others and acts accordingly, just like before, he will attain mental distraction through speech. Because for the opponents who come to debate, these situations will occur like this: there, what should be proven should be understood, and this should be understood as being gathered here to watch. Thus, these views will become eighteen. Others, again, renunciates or Brahmins say that the self after death is conscious, without disease, and speaks after death, they say this with sixteen things: Some say that the self is eternal, without disease, and conscious after death. They

Likewise, I am neither permanent, nor both permanent and impermanent, nor neither permanent nor impermanent, nor finite, nor infinite, nor both finite and infinite, nor neither finite nor infinite, should be said to be conscious after death. Similarly, with the notion of permanence, with the notion of variety, with the notion of smallness, with the notion of infinity, with pure happiness, with pure suffering, and with neither happiness nor suffering, I am without illness, and should be said to be conscious after death. If they also desire the self with the five aggregates, then it contradicts the experience of happiness and suffering at all times, but even so, they only have such views. Others say that I am without consciousness and without illness after death, and they also speak of eight things, that is, I am permanent and without illness, and not conscious after death. Similarly, as long as I am neither finite nor infinite, I should be said to be unconscious after death. Similarly, those who say neither conscious nor unconscious are of eight kinds, that is, I am permanent and called neither conscious nor unconscious after death, as long as I am neither finite nor infinite, I am called neither conscious nor unconscious after death. Thus, there are temporarily fifty views. Those who speak of annihilation are of seven kinds, one of which will temporarily become such a view holder, that is, any self, this is corporeal and vast, born of the four great elements, born of father and mother, as long as it exists, it is always accompanied by disease, retribution, and pain, once separated from the body, death and transmigration will be destroyed. Only in this way will I be completely annihilated. Just as a broken pot cannot be glued together again, or like a broken stone. Furthermore, I exist, have a body, possess all limbs and organs, come from the heavens, enjoy desires, once separated from the body, as long as it exists, it will be completely annihilated. Similarly, coming from the heavens, enjoying in the body.

The formless are of four kinds: from approaching the sphere of infinite space, to approaching the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, after death, they are completely cut off, and those who hold the view of annihilation are seven. There are five who speak of attaining nirvana in this very life: One says, 'I have attained the sight of the mind, and have obtained mastery over yoga, that is, I have obtained freedom and autonomy, and with the five desirable qualities of the gods, I am completely indulgent, completely following, playing and rejoicing, completely enjoying, and with the purity of attaining nirvana in this very life, I know myself to be pure.' Another thinks that freedom and autonomy are not as they are, because desires change, completely change, and separate, causing sorrow and lamentation to arise, therefore, being separated from desires, having investigation and analysis, born with investigation and analysis, arising from the first dhyana and abiding, he thinks of himself as having attained nirvana in this very life. Investigation and analysis arise correctly, and he also thinks that this is vast, being separated from investigation, without analysis, the joy and happiness arising from samadhi, the second dhyana thinks of attaining nirvana in this very life. Another also thinks that the vastness of this mind, which is caused by joy, is broad, being separated from the desire for joy, the body experiences happiness, the third dhyana of equanimity and complete purity of mindfulness, thinks of attaining nirvana in this very life. Another thinks that happiness is the effort of the mind, and also thinks that this is vast, the fourth dhyana, which is neither happiness nor suffering, proclaims to have nirvana in this very life. If this also, because of abandoning the desire for the form realm, at that time also abandons the latent tendencies, and also because of universally practicing, he is not liberated from the three realms. Even so, for the time being, he also thinks that he has attained nirvana in this very life, and that he himself has attained liberation, and the views called nirvana in this very life are five. When all are counted together, there are sixty-two views.
