The meaning of 'non-extreme destruction' is explained. Among them, regarding characteristics, this is extreme destruction, which is the meaning of making things non-existent, and one is not accustomed to this. The so-called 'it is not so' means that characteristics will be destroyed. Because there is no common application for such conceptualizations, separate answers are given. Thus, destroying characteristics, because there is no such conceptualization and common application, and also by the power of the signless samadhi, one does not commonly apply to one's own characteristics. To this, the venerable Subhuti negates with 'it is not so,' and in order to clarify what is engraved in the heart, the Blessed One said, 'What do you think?' and so on. How does destroying characteristics become destruction? The so-called cultivating characteristics refers to the intention of commonly applying conceptualizations to this. The intention of 'Bodhisattvas should not act in this way' and so on is: The so-called cultivating characteristics refers to not applying to characteristics through the common application of conceptualizations, and also by the power of the signless samadhi. That is to say, for Bodhisattvas who have perfected the two accumulations in the three great asamkhyeya kalpas, if Bodhisattvas, with the wisdom of non-discrimination, truly hold the grounds such as the Extremely Joyful, there is also no common application to characteristics. However, this is not abandoning characteristics in all aspects, but because of the common application of subsequent wisdom. If again, Bodhisattvas who have perfected the accumulations will not necessarily arise in the first asamkhyeya kalpa, because they will also strive to completely abandon characteristics in this life, which will fall into the Hearer's Bodhi, how can they achieve perfect and complete enlightenment? This is also said in reference to ordinary Bodhisattvas who have not yet attained the grounds. Noble ones, in the first ground itself, do not possess the perfection of qualities such as the Hearer's Bodhi and the Solitary Buddha's Bodhi.

It is said that completely transcending from those is called the tenth ground, etc. This "is," etc., is used to summarize. That "what is mind," etc., is the object of the mind. That "what is the sign," etc., is declared in some place. And the meaning there is just this. That "what is the nature," etc., is what is one's own nature. That "what is the sign" is its cause. All those, that is, being completely familiar with the signless, means just getting used to it. Meditating in a dream, etc., refers to showing the samadhi itself, which mainly takes the two states as a temporary place in the profound place. If the signless samadhi was mainly emphasized before, then because it does not arise without it, emptiness and wishless samadhi can be obtained. If all dharmas do not exist, then by practicing, the prajnaparamita will increase, and at that time, any bodhisattva who enters the three samadhis in a dream, his prajnaparamita will also increase. If the prajnaparamita does not increase in a dream, then it will be there when awake. If it exists like that, there will be some difference between the existence and non-existence of dharmas in dreams and waking states, thus thinking and asking arrogantly. Therefore, the venerable Subhuti, "if," etc., shows equality through dreams and waking states, here the bodhisattva does not tremble by not focusing on dharmas in waking and dreaming states. Therefore, a dream is called, a day is called, this is just a name. Thus, if the daytime and dreams are the same, if the wisdom of samadhi increases when awake, then the wisdom of samadhi will also increase in dreams. Why is that? Because it is non-discrimination, discrimination is difference, non-discrimination is no difference. Shariputra said: Venerable Subhuti, anything, etc.

This is the thought of the Elder Śāriputra. If the dharmas are the same in both daytime and dreams, then what will happen to the power of good deeds such as giving alms, etc., and non-virtuous deeds such as killing, etc., which are also done in dreams, to increase those good deeds, etc., and to obtain heavens, etc.? Or what will happen to the accumulation here of the power of non-virtuous deeds to bestow hells, etc.? Because that person has accumulated them. Since the dharmas are the same in both daytime and dreams, the accumulation of the one who does good will have the characteristics of heavens, etc. The exhaustion of non-virtue is the characteristic of hells, etc. Therefore, two are spoken of. In some books, etc., the word "exhaustion" is in the form of a fragment, or the letter A has become a fragment, and those who ask pronounce it as approaching the sound of O due to carelessness. Subhūti said: How does the Blessed One say that all dharmas are like dreams, etc.? The meaning is this: accumulation and exhaustion exist only for things that exist. How are all dharmas like dreams? Likewise, if that action and that agent do not exist at all during the day and when awake, why do you speak of accumulation or exhaustion? If someone sees a river full of water or sees the ocean dry up in a dream, nevertheless, that will also become accumulation and exhaustion. Thus, it has already been shown that for a Bodhisattva who has temporarily achieved complete realization, there is no difference in seeing daytime and dreams as the same. That is also, etc., because it shows the difference between daytime and dreams, it is said for the sake of novelty. That person refers to the one who committed killing during the day. "Tomorrow" refers to having killed in a dream, and upon waking, still always rejoicing in both, saying, "I killed." At that time, what will be accumulated for rejoicing in what was done during the day, and what will be exhausted for what was done in the dream? If it exists, then there will be a difference between dreams and wakefulness.
