Will the earth realm change into something else? Or, how could this, being different from those, become a substance? Therefore, because it is not the nature of a substance, it is not said to be permanent. For that very reason, it is said to be the ultimate truth, being free from the fault of annihilation. How then are the words of the noble ones? Namely: 'That itself is the ultimate truth, suchness is considered a substance, truth is that which is not deceptive, the one who realizes that is called a Buddha.' What is being said here? These words were spoken to show that the ultimate truth exists for those who say that suchness arises knowingly in all circumstances. This is according to the reasoning that 'the sound of any object is the meaning of the sound.' Just by this, since this, which is other than the aggregates and so forth, is not taken as self, how could it exist as a substance? For that very reason, the nature of the completely imputed is said to exist nominally, while the dependent is said to exist substantially. Both exist conventionally. The thoroughly established exists ultimately, but it is not said to exist as a substance. This is the teaching of the noble Asanga from the Treatise on the Determination of Questions. Is suchness not profound? This is to say that in the state of being with defilements, one cannot say that form and so forth are other than or not other than suchness, therefore it is profound. Does suchness have mind? This is asking what kind of nature of support and supported exists together with suchness for any compounded mind. The answer is: no. This is saying that the completely imputed and the thoroughly established do not have the nature of support and supported. Is mind suchness? This is asking what the nature of suchness is for the compounded mind. The answer is: no. Because it is with defilements, it is not the very nature of suchness, this is a separate answer. Is it other than suchness? This is asking whether the compounded mind is other than suchness. The answer is: no. This is because the completely imputed cannot be said to be other than or not other than the thoroughly established, so it is a separate answer. Have you correctly seen suchness?

Action is the mind arrogantly claiming to truly see all phenomena, and the question is "It is not so," because the state of suchness lacks the nature of being an object to focus on and the nature of focusing, hence the separate answers. "Acting in the profound" means that the profound action of suchness, having become such, is the meaning of being attained through reason. "Not acting in that either" means showing that there is no action in that, and universal action refers to the characteristics as objects of focus. Not entering means not changing. "Having no universal action" means non-appearance. However, in order to attain complete perfect enlightenment, one must act in some way, otherwise one will not attain complete perfect enlightenment because the two accumulations are not complete. What is said is that Subhuti, Bodhisattva Mahasattva, how, etc., is through acting in the ultimate truth, etc. However, Subhuti immediately said, "Not acting in that either," therefore it is said, how does one act in the ultimate truth? The meaning is that with regard to acting in the ultimate truth, or existing, or not existing, there is no true action, and thus acting, because there is no true action in either, it is said that one does not act anywhere. Because there is no true action in either, it needs to be accomplished with much effort, so it is also said to act in the ultimate truth, therefore there is no fault. In order to clarify that this non-dual nature is the action of the ultimate truth, it is said, does acting in the ultimate truth mean acting in characteristics? Is it the characteristic of two, or the characteristic of non-duality? The answer is "It is not so," it is not the characteristic of two, nor is it the characteristic of non-duality. "That characteristic" refers to the characteristic of two and non-duality. "Destroyed?" means, if it is destroyed, what will happen? This is asking, with regard to the statement "Nowhere is it destroyed," is it also not destroyed? What is not destroyed? The meaning is this. Somewhere its characteristic
