What is it? Whatever exists in name. Whatever exists as a substance should be understood as existing conventionally. What is truly existent? The nature of complete accomplishment, the meaning of supreme wisdom, is truly existent. For example, suchness. Moreover, the nature of suchness, substance, name, and the nature of convention are all inconceivable, because they are not something that can be expressed in words. Therefore, in the treatise on logic, the Commentary on Valid Cognition (Pramāṇavārttika), it says: Whatever has the power to perform a function, that is truly existent here. The others are said to exist conventionally. Those are the characteristics of self and generality. The "here" mentioned here refers to the treatise on logic. This is the reasoning that speaks of the nature of valid cognition for nominalists. From the scriptures, it is the opposite: the self-characteristic exists conventionally, and the general characteristic exists truly, this is the intention. Therefore, the commentator explains this treatise on logic in this way. The venerable Dignāga also said: It is very far from the teachings of the Sage, whoever wants to lead the nature of reality through the path of logic. What is the difference between suchness and the Perfection of Wisdom, or is there no difference? For example, the pus of all dharmas also exists in the state of impure sentient beings. That very suchness is the very pure Bodhisattva ground. When it is realized, from then on it is called the Perfection of Wisdom. In the state of perfect purity, it is the Dharmakāya of the Buddhas. After attaining the state of Arhat, what follows? Or what is prior? Because there is such a doubt, the venerable Subhūti himself said, from the very beginning, etc. That "that" follows suchness. Why? Because there is doubt, so by "whatever exists" etc., it is strongly explained that the Tathāgatagarbha's suchness, the suchness of all dharmas, and the suchness of Subhūti are all one.

To explain its meaning, if the term "suchness" itself possesses the self-nature of emptiness, then non-suchness should also possess the self-nature of non-emptiness. Without incompatible opposites, it is impossible to be an antidote. Therefore, all dharmas would also become non-empty. Thus, it is said (in the scriptures), "Suchness is also not suchness." The meaning is: Suchness is the ultimate truth, and the ultimate truth is empty of all elaborations such as existence and non-existence. Therefore, there is no small thing called "suchness." So it is said that suchness is not suchness. As it is said (in the scriptures): "The view of emptiness is the, Liberation of all views, said the Victorious One, Whoever has the view of emptiness, It is said that they are untamable." The abiding place of suchness is the abiding place itself, and the abiding place is the abiding place. This characteristic of the abiding place of dharma also shows that there is no difference, that is, identity. Identity is also stated in other ways, such as "unchanging." Because it follows the previous self-nature, it is unchanging. Because it does not produce other self-natures, it is without transformation. This shows the immutable perfect accomplishment, because there is no self-nature of conceptualization, it is without conceptualization. Because it is not the object of conceptualization, it is without conceptualization. This shows the perfect accomplishment achieved through the non-inverted perfect accomplishment. For identity, other reasons are also stated, such as "how." Because it has no obstruction to anything, it is pervasive. Saying "this is one" is because the lineage is the same. It is also said "also varies," which is "non-dual," one in terms of self-nature. Saying "cannot be made two" means it cannot be divided or cannot be made two. Therefore, it is non-dual suchness, because there is no aspect of non-dual difference, so it is also suchness.

Thus, in any case, saying "any suchness is not" is what is to be proven. Saying "for any reason" refers to having a distinct and definite connection. Saying "that suchness" does not mean changing in that way, but rather refers to the meaning of all self-nature. If so, how is it? Saying "any suchness is not" means that for all self-nature of phenomena, that is suchness, but for one, it is not something. Furthermore, saying "why is this?" means that from anywhere it is suchness, that is, from any distinctly defined place or time. Saying "the nature of suchness will be realized" does not mean changing, but rather from all places and times, that is suchness, therefore it is not a suchness with a distinct and definite connection to something, but rather refers to everything. Because that suchness is not anything, therefore it is said to be non-dual, the former is shown closely, following after is the main thing, and gathering together, it is like that and so on. Saying "unmade suchness," it is also unmade, and because it is constant, it is also suchness, therefore it follows the Tathagata. Thus, the suchness of the Tathagata follows, and a close indication is made to the permanent one, and in order to show following the Tathagata, it is said "what is unmade suchness" and so on, because suchness is non-dual, therefore the permanent one follows the Tathagata, and together with the Tathagata, the self-nature is one, it is following. Or, the Tathagata and the permanent one, Subhuti, etc., because suchness is one, suchness follows the Tathagata, the permanent one exists, but how does the Tathagata himself follow, because the Tathagata and the permanent one, etc., are distinct, after doubting in this way, just like suchness, both the Tathagata and the permanent one, etc., also because of the self-nature of suchness, it is shown that there is no difference.
