Subhuti, in order to explain the distinctions of ascertainment, and to teach the instructions for ascertainment, which state that all the dharmas previously spoken of are characterized by non-apprehension, he has temporarily begun, and has spoken of the practice of ascertainment, which is characterized by the pacification of the two extremes, and so forth, saying, "I have doubts in my mind." Remorse is not a statement, because no evil has been done. To have doubts in one's heart is to think that it is a fault committed out of ignorance. "Not seeing the object" means all the dharmas that are consistent with reason. How can one gather and establish by merely holding the name? "Bodhisattva" is only a slight indication. The Perfection of Wisdom should also be observed, because it is the main thing. To impute something to what does not exist is called gathering. To slander what exists is called establishing. In this regard, if the conventionally imputed and the dependent are said to be the nature of the truly existent, then the extreme of imputation will occur. The perfectly established nature of reality also falls into the extreme of slander because it does not truly exist. Or, if the three natures, whichever part has the characteristic of contention, are slandered, then it is the extreme of slander. To conceive of something as existing with the characteristic of non-existence is the extreme of imputation. As it is said: Because, grasping with the characteristic of existence, it is only non-existent, with the nature of imputation, it is considered to be the characteristic of existence and non-existence. So it is said. The dependent nature is also not so existent, because how can it be known by appearing as two? In no way is it non-existent, because it exists merely as delusion. As it is said: It exists in the nature of delusion, how does appearance not exist? Because of dependence, it is considered to be the characteristic of existence and non-existence. So it is said. The perfectly established nature cannot be said to exist, because the grasped and the grasper, which are conventionally imputed, have the characteristic of non-existence. It cannot be said that the characteristic of non-existence is existence.

It is also not possible to say "non-existence." Because it exists with the nature of being separate from something, if it is said to be "existent" in that way, it becomes an extreme of superimposition because it is obtained as existing by the nature of things. However, if it is said to be "non-existent," then it is also non-existent like a rabbit's horn, and therefore it becomes an extreme of denial. Therefore, it is not possible to say it in either way. As it is said: "By what non-dual way it exists, the two are only non-existent, therefore the self-nature is completely accomplished, desiring the characteristics of existence and non-existence." So it is said. Again, what is said to be merely a name is the Blessed One's "However," and so on. "Does not abide" means that it does not abide like conditioned phenomena. "Also does not not abide" means that it does not abide like unconditioned space and so on. In some places, it appears as "neither abides nor is separate from abiding, nor is not separate from abiding." The explanation is: it does not abide, because of the nature of permanence. Because there is no permanence, etc., it also does not not abide. It is abiding and separate from abiding, because of the nature of being different from permanence. Not separate from abiding is also the same. Concluding the proof of not accepting the two extremes, that is, the Blessed One "If that," and so on. "Thus" is the nature of the proof of not accepting the two extremes. "Profound" means the Prajnaparamita that is particularly difficult to believe in. "Saying" means the scripture. "Showing" means from the meaning. "Near showing" means from the arising of wisdom by the nature of thinking about the meaning. "Causing to show" means through reading. "The mind is not frightened," etc., is as before. "Faith" means to ascertain by eliminating the two extremes. Superior intention is the increased intention, that is, by this. That is, "by one side." Not separate from Prajnaparamita means that it should be recognized by the nature of eliminating the two extremes. "Abiding," etc., means non-retrogression, that is, retro-
