If the manifestation of any dharma is not established, then it is not a dharma. Why is that? Because not established means to teach and show the perfection of wisdom of non-establishment. And, apart from non-establishment, all dharmas are not perceived. If it is taught in this way, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not be discouraged, and such a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is practicing the perfection of wisdom. At what time will the Bodhisattva think that these dharmas are close to the perfection of wisdom? By what cause are form, etc., not produced? That is not form, etc. For what reason is the obscuration of form, etc., not form, etc.? For what reason are form, etc., not counted as the number of duality? There are many such questions. From the questions and answers of the elders below, the meanings that are explained in detail, must be grasped tightly, and up to the chapter of Indra, it should be understood as certain. First, in order to determine the meaning of what is taught, the question of the elder Subhuti will be shown, that is, "Thus asked," etc. In order for the name of the Bodhisattva that needs to be determined to appear correctly in the context, the context is spoken first. The meaning of what the Blessed One said, "These are Bodhisattvas," etc., is this: In order to distinguish that meaning, the Blessed One said, "Bodhisattva Mahasattva." The Blessed One said "Bodhisattva" in the first speech, and for that word, there are two words, that is, "This is called Bodhisattva." What is the basic meaning expressed by the word Bodhisattva? It is understood in this way. The Blessed One replied, "There is no basic meaning," etc., the meaning is this: For Bodhisattvas, there are four meanings, namely Bodhisattva and the nature of aggregates, the conventional Bodhisattva and the ultimate B

Bodhisattva! Since all four of these are of the nature of non-substantiality, the basic meaning of the term Bodhisattva is the absence of a basic meaning. The absence of a basic meaning refers to the absence of a place. Therefore, it should be understood as the absence of a basic meaning. If the term Bodhisattva were solely of the nature of substance, then its basic meaning would become something with a basis and a place. Why is that? Because neither the Bodhisattva nor the Bodhisattva exists. Therefore, the basic meaning of Bodhisattva is without a basis, which is to say, non-abiding. This is a synonym. The reason given for this is: Why is that? Because of "all phenomena," and so on. Among these, "all phenomena" refers to the nature of unconditioned phenomena. Therefore, that which possesses the nature of Suchness is Bodhi; that which possesses the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, such as sentient beings, aggregates, elements, sense bases, and dependent origination, with the nature of imputation and other-power, is the conventional Bodhisattva; that which possesses the nature of realizing the realm of Dharma is called the ultimate Bodhisattva. Because one trains in non-existence, without attachment to all these phenomena, it is called the absence of a basic meaning. Among these, Bodhi is the nature of Suchness, the nature of non-duality, which is called the characteristic of non-existence. Because sentient beings have become non-existent due to the absence of substance, the conventional Bodhisattva is also non-existent due to the nature of imputation and other-power. The ultimate Bodhisattva is also the same, possessing the nature of realization, like space, seeing all phenomena as the nature of non-duality, and therefore is said to have become non-existent from Suchness. In previous books, there was the statement: What is the meaning of Bodhisattva? The Blessed One's answer was "regarding all phenomena," and so on. Here, too, there are words of speech, meaning that it is explained with this meaning, or that there are four words, what is their meaning? This is the meaning of the question. The answer is that because there is no basic meaning, one trains in non-attachment.
