because of the absence [of defilements]. Therefore, it is said to abide in the absence of defilements. The meaning is as follows: For those sentient beings who are of uncertain lineage and have dull faculties, the Tathagata, knowing that they are not qualified to practice the authentic Bodhi conduct in the realm of defilements that has not been abandoned, first causes them to abide in the state of Arhatship. Then, the Bodhisattva Vehicle is taught to them, so that they develop the intention to be able to fully accomplish the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Then, gradually, they will gain acceptance of the profound Dharma. Thus, for those who have a definite intention for the Buddha-ground and who have individually obtained acceptance of the profound Dharma-realm, the Tathagata prophesies them for the sake of Buddhahood itself. They abide in the eighth ground at the very first path of seeing. Just as those who, through a path that is outside the Hearer Vehicle, have abandoned desire for desire in the desire realm, are non-returners at the very path of seeing, so too, in the Noble Dharma White Lotus Sutra, the prophecy of perfect and complete enlightenment is for the great Bodhisattva who abides in the eighth ground, who is spontaneously accomplished, non-conceptual, and steadfast. Since they do not generate the realm of defilements, they are superior to the Hearers who abide in the absence of defilements. Even so, since it is taught as being without mind, it is reasonable that the steadfast one is praised as being steadfast, as it is said that the steadfast one is the most excellent of those who abide in the absence of defilements. Since it does not generate the realm of defilements, nothing is needed for the chief one. Now, the fact that the steadfast Shariputra praises with "Well done!" and so forth shows the benefit of the characteristic of non-retrogression for the Bodhisattva who possesses diligence. Therefore, one should examine non-retrogression closely with "Therefore," and so forth. One should draw near through non-retrogression itself. Relying on the first generation of the mind of enlightenment, which is named the Joyful Ground, and the characteristics of all phenomena that are emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness.

In order to realize, after surpassing the grounds of Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, it is said that one will not regress. Without being separated from the Prajñāpāramitā, one should also recognize all dharmas with the nature of not being self-satisfied. Now, the Prajñāpāramitā firmly establishes the benefit for all the trainings of the grounds of Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas, as well as for complete and perfect enlightenment. The so-called "ground of Śrāvakas" and so on, is the practice of meditating on the dharmas of those who practice for the enlightenment of Śrāvakas, the ground or place of Śrāvakas can also be said to be the ground. By relying on what, that wisdom will arise in them. Similarly, there is also the Buddha-ground. Here, the learning is for the sake of Bodhisattvas to generate wisdom that understands the three vehicles, not for the sake of ultimate liberation. Here, the Bodhisattvas are the main ones. Even so, the great Bodhisattvas who wish to study the Śrāvakayāna seek from the great wisdoms. What should be listened to is the scripture. What should be held is the recitation. What is meant by holding is placing it in the heart. What is meant by reading is reciting it for the sake of not forgetting. What is meant by fully understanding is from the meaning. One should understand in all ways, fully recite, also in order to explain the scriptures and meanings to others. Following others is also for the sake of those who can also perfect the accumulation of merit and wisdom, thereby entering, maturing, and liberating. In some places it says that it should be thoroughly proclaimed. What is meant by learning is because one must be liberated from learning. What is meant by practicing yoga is through the liberation of contemplation and discrimination. Yoga is Śamatha and Vipaśyanā. What is meant by time, things, paths, and going is the action of yoga itself, however, because the extremely famous action is not the action itself, therefore things are the cause. What is meant by the Bodhisattva-ground, the grounds of the Bodhisattvas are ten, namely the Joyful Ground and up to the Cloud of Dharma. That itself is called the Knowledge of the Path.
