Unstained supreme joy is joy. The complete suffering of afflictions is pacified, and the very nature of the agreeable wisdom of bliss free from afflictions and one-pointedness of mind is its nature. The one-pointedness of mind with investigation and analysis on objects such as the faults of desire is its characteristic. The cause of the second dhyana is the inner true cause. There, investigation and analysis disturb the mind. Seeing the benefits in the absence of investigation, great pure faith arises inwardly, and the attainment of true pure faith is the true arising of the essence itself. Because of truly abandoning turbidity, it is not by the power of investigation and analysis. Like water truly arising from the continuum of inner pure faith, the mind abides on its own object of union. The object is the arising and pacification of desires or investigation and analysis, and the result is joy and happiness as before. However, here, even though investigation and analysis are overcome, one should know the faultless supreme joy, and its nature is the same as before. Thus, the characteristic of the one-pointedness of mind with joy and happiness, free from investigation and analysis, with desire, investigation and analysis, faults, and arising and pacification themselves as objects, is the second dhyana. The causes of the third dhyana are equanimity, mindfulness, and clear comprehension. Equanimity is said to be the view of near pacification, which is the combination of the mind's equality in all virtuous conduct, without harm, without analysis, and abiding in the middle. In the previous dhyanas, the effort of the mind is not abandoned due to the power of joy and great joy, and because it has become turbid, equanimity is not shown near to them because they are not completely perfect. Here, it turns back from detachment separately. Effort becomes a limb of dhyana, and equanimity enters. Mindfulness is remembering, and it is also characterized by not forgetting. Clear comprehension and mindfulness themselves are closely placed, and if clear comprehension is incomplete, mindfulness will decline. Mindfulness

And because even mindfulness is completely non-contradictory, if the meditations are also gathered into one place, even so, it is because this is spoken with its own words. To abandon joy, to abandon it with joy itself, even in the absence of complete mindfulness and awareness, it is said to be practicing truthfully. Here, the fruit is happiness itself, truly combined with the mind that makes it scattered, thereby obtaining the distinction of concentration, and obtaining accordance, because joy is completely abandoned. The nature is as before. Thus, for the faults and renunciation of desires and joy, and rejoicing in the object of peace, and possessing the happiness of explanation, the third meditation is characterized by one-pointedness of mind. For the fourth, complete purification of equanimity is the cause. Equanimity and mindfulness have been explained before. Their complete purification refers to not being close to those who previously dwelt in meditation, such as happiness. This is also because of the extreme manifestation, for mindfulness, complete purification of awareness, no different fruit is spoken of. Because it is neither happiness nor suffering, feeling is the absence of perception and so on there, abiding in the object, because equanimity has no feeling similar to this, it is said to be free from action, because it has obtained immovability and is completely pure, and so is mindfulness. This itself is the fruit here, not happiness. Because happiness is extremely superior. Mindfulness is not close to those who have wisdom, and to those who are merely attached to the mind, because of the difference, because happiness is completely abandoned. The nature is as before. Thus, for the faults and renunciation of desire, joy, and happiness, and with peace itself as the object, equanimity and mindfulness are completely purified, the fourth meditation is characterized by one-pointedness of mind. These meditations are called possessing the limbs of enlightenment, they are truly possessed by the seven limbs of enlightenment, which are the characteristics of transcendental mindfulness, discrimination of dharmas, joy, tranquility, equanimity, diligence, and samadhi.

Those who possess it are not worldly beings. For those who have transcended the world, the sevenfold correct application of mind does not exist either, because there is no complete entry into joy and so forth. The four immeasurables are love, compassion, joy, and equanimity, because for all directions, limitless sentient beings are the field of activity, therefore they are immeasurable. May these sentient beings meet with happiness, this is love. May they be free from suffering, this is compassion. May they not be separated from happiness, this is joy. May the object that is the cause of desire become the proximate cause, and may the complete afflictions of hatred, which is the cause of desire and suffering, be liberated, this is equanimity. These forms of happiness, and the thought of correct union, and the thought of wanting to be separated from suffering, and the thought of wanting not to be separated from happiness, and the thought of being without afflictions, have been explained. The four formless absorptions are the four absorptions, namely the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Among these, the first absorption is when all perceptions of form have been completely transcended, the perceptions of anger have been abandoned, and because various perceptions are not attended to, it is said that one abides in the sphere of infinite space, this is the sutra. Among these, the perceptions called "form" are those that rely on form or have form as their object. Therefore, by abandoning the perceptions that are correctly combined with eye consciousness, anger refers to various harms, the perceptions of the correct aggregation of sound, smell, taste, and touch, and the cessation of the ear, nose, tongue, and body consciousnesses that are correctly and similarly combined. The various perceptions refer to the consciousness with various objects, and the mind consciousness that is correctly and similarly combined, not attending to it is correct combination.
