From the statement, "To whom should a Bodhisattva be instructed?" it clearly proclaims the most important instruction with the words, "This is the instruction and subsequent guidance." Furthermore, it is said here that what is called "Bodhisattva without focus" is inner emptiness. Similarly, other emptinesses should also be understood. As the master Bhavyaviveka said: With sixteen kinds of excellent distinctions, how is the order of emptiness? What is taught in the Eight Thousand Verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra should be understood by other names. However, emptiness is only one, in which all phenomena become one by being non-dual. Therefore, how can its forms be divided into many? It is true that due to the distinctions of the Bodhisattvas' attention and so on, the forms become many and different, but not by their own nature. Here, the Bodhisattva who is well-joined to the attention of emptiness should think like this: If all phenomena are empty and non-existent, then what is the "self" in "one's own self is one's own protector, the actions done by oneself" and so on? One should think like this. First, one should grasp and contemplate the inner phenomena, such as form and feeling, and not see that the object to be expressed by the word "self" is truly existent in the ultimate sense. Therefore, for the sake of the profound "self" spoken of by the outsiders, one should contemplate the absence of a person. For those who believe in the profound "inner sense bases," one should contemplate the non-existence of the inner sense bases for the sake of both, which is inner emptiness. Therein, a person is shown by the way of self. Similarly, by "ear" and so on, some emptiness is shown by way of the absence of self of a person. In some cases, "the eye is empty by the eye, the ear is empty by the ear" and so on, is by way of the absence of self of phenomena, therefore it should be explained in two ways. Therein, there are four ways to examine the eye: the eye itself is the self, I am the one with the eye, and...

Calling the eye "I," and calling "I" the eye. The eye itself is called "I," this is grasping at the eye as self. "I possess the eye," and so forth, these three are grasping at the eye as belonging to self. Thereupon, not perceiving these four kinds of grasping in relation to the eye, knowing them as they are, one is frightened, and thoroughly understanding that the eye is empty of self and of what belongs to self, one truly sees accordingly. Likewise, in relation to the ear and so forth, this is emptiness within through the door of the selflessness of the person. Through the door of the selflessness of phenomena, there are three kinds of eye: the imputed eye, the conceptual eye, and the eye of suchness. Among these, the object of the eye that grasps with the aspect of what is to be expressed and what expresses, is the imputed eye. The appearance of the eye that abides in the nature of grasping and the grasped of that very thing, is the conceptual eye. Because it is separate from the aspect of what is to be expressed and separate from the appearance of the eye, the nature of perfect accomplishment that is to be individually cognized by each, is called the eye of suchness. Thereupon, "the eye is empty of the eye," that is, the eye is the eye of suchness. The function of the eye is by the imputed and conceptual eyes. "Empty" means the meaning of being separate. Likewise, it should be applied to "the ear is empty of the ear" and so forth. However, ultimate reality is not to be expressed, and the nature of the eye is not. If it becomes the nature of the eye, then it will become something to be expressed. Therefore, why is it called the eye of suchness? This is true, but even so, when one wishes to express by differentiating for the sake of thoroughly showing the aspect of the complete transformation of the aggregates of the eye and so forth, and forms, sounds, and so forth, this indivisible and uniform aspect, at that time, since there is no other way to go, it is just the suchness of form, the suchness of sound, the suchness of smell, and so forth.

These sounds have been explained separately, but it is not so; it is not that form, nor is it what it expresses. Therefore, whatever this eye of Dharma, etc., is, it is said to be inner emptiness, which is separated from the nature of the inner self's eye, etc., and the place of birth. In this way, even if there are two forms for inner things, it can transform deep attachments. Blessed Mother, as for this, as it is said, "I do not see the Bodhisattva," this itself shows inner emptiness, because the Bodhisattva has not seen the nature of my essence and form, etc. As it is said, "The Bodhisattva is invisible; what does the Able One say is me? Inner things are very deep; that is the saying of emptiness." It is like this. Again, in order to transform the thought of grasping external things as edible, external emptiness is established. Grasping as edible is also the view of grasping form, etc., as self by outsiders, and the distinction of the object of those who practice this Dharma. Among them, in order to transform the former, it is said, "Form is empty, with self and what belongs to self." In order to transform the latter, it is said, "Form is empty with form, sound is empty with sound," etc., as before. Therefore, for external objects, those that are separated from self and what belongs to self, and are separated from the characteristics of their own aggregates and Dharma nature, are called external emptiness. Blessed Mother, what you said, "Form itself is separated from the nature of form," shows this. When establishing the aggregates, the five faculties, namely eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, and the five objects, namely form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, are called form because they each destroy the things that are form. Among them, for inner form, etc., there is only inner emptiness. The absence of form taken by the eye and sound, etc., taken by appearance is external emptiness. As it is said, "Form with the nature of form, the saying of emptiness is again." External
