Regarding that statement of 'not destroying,' what is not destroying? This is its meaning. In some places, there is the statement of 'utterly destroying its characteristics,' to which, regarding characteristics, what is utterly destroying, which is making it without substance, familiarity with this meaning is not so. The so-called 'no,' means that characteristics will be destroyed. Because there is no pervasion of such thoughts, separate answers are given. Therefore, the so-called 'characteristics are destroyed,' because there is no such thought and pervasion, and also because of the power of signless samadhi, not pervading one's own characteristics, this is what the Elder Subhuti denies with 'no,' in order to clarify the meaning that dwells in the heart, the Blessed One said, 'What do you think?' and so on. Characteristics are destroyed, how can they become destroyers? The so-called 'cultivating characteristics,' refers to the idea of thinking about pervading this. Regarding 'Bodhisattvas should not cultivate in this way,' etc., the intention is that, the so-called 'should cultivate characteristics,' because of the pervasion of thought, and also because of the power of signless samadhi, not pervading characteristics, if for the Bodhisattva who has perfected the two accumulations of the three countless eons of emergence, and also for the grounds such as the Joyful Ground, which are completely grasped by non-discriminating wisdom, there is also no pervasion of characteristics, however, this is not completely abandoning characteristics, because of pervading the wisdom that is born afterwards. If again, the Bodhisattva who has perfected the accumulations will also not emerge in the first countless eon, because he will strive to completely abandon characteristics in this life, this will fall into the Hearer's Bodhi, how can he attain complete Bodhi here? This is also spoken with reference to the ordinary being Bodhisattva who has not yet attained the ground.

The noble one, in the very first ground, will truly transcend those who do not possess the perfections such as the enlightenment of the Hearers and the enlightenment of the Solitary Buddhas, and thus the ten grounds and so forth are proclaimed. These are summarized by "This is" and so forth. "That which is the mind" is the object of the mind. "What is the characteristic?" is proclaimed in some places. However, the meaning is the same. "What is the nature?" is what is one's own essence. "What is the characteristic?" is the cause of that. All of that, being completely familiar with the signless, is just getting used to it. "Meditating in a dream" and so forth, is to show the samadhi itself, which is mainly the two states of becoming a temporary practice in a profound state. If, again, the signless samadhi is mainly done before, then emptiness and wishless samadhi will be attained because of the non-arising without non-existence. If all phenomena are non-existent, then even so, the perfection of wisdom will increase through meditation, and at that time, whichever bodhisattva enters into the three samadhis in a dream, the perfection of wisdom will also increase. If, again, the perfection of wisdom does not increase in a dream, then it will be there in the waking state. When it exists in that way, is there any difference between the existence and non-existence of phenomena in dreams and waking states? Thus, he is conceited and asks. Therefore, the venerable Subhuti, with "if" and so forth, shows the equality of dreams and waking states, here the bodhisattva does not tremble by not focusing on phenomena in waking and dreaming. Therefore, the so-called dream and the so-called one day are just names. In that way, if daytime and dreams are equal, then if wisdom increases in the samadhi of waking up, then wisdom will also increase in the samadhi in the dream. Why is that? It is called non-discrimination. Discrimination is difference.

English

Non-discrimination is the absence of difference. Shariputra said: "The venerable Subhuti, etc." This is the thought of the venerable Shariputra. If the dharmas are the same in both day and dream, then how can performing virtuous deeds such as giving in dreams, and performing non-virtuous deeds such as killing, cause the increase of virtuous actions and the ability to attain heavens, etc.? Or how can performing evil deeds bestow hells, etc., and how can one accumulate them here? Because that person accumulates them. Since the dharmas are the same in both day and dream, the accumulation of the virtuous will have the characteristics of heavens, etc. The exhaustion of the non-virtuous is the characteristic of hells, etc. Therefore, both are spoken of. Some books, etc., and the word "exhaustion," in the form of fragments, or the letter A becoming a fragment, are carelessly pronounced as the letter O by those who ask. Subhuti said: "How does the Blessed One say that all dharmas are like dreams, etc.?" The meaning is that accumulation and exhaustion apply to existing things. How are all dharmas like dreams? Likewise, in daytime and wakefulness, if that action and the agent do not exist in any way, why do you speak of accumulation or exhaustion? If someone sees a river full of water in a dream, or sees the ocean dried up, there will still be accumulation and exhaustion. Thus, it has been shown that for a Bodhisattva who has fully attained realization, there is no difference between day and dream. Moreover, because of "etc.," it is newly spoken to show the difference between day and dream. That person refers to the one who killed during the day. "From tomorrow" means having killed in a dream and waking up, still always rejoicing in both, saying "I killed." At that time, what is the meaning of rejoicing in what was done during the day?
