That is to say, the statement about conditioned mind is that whatever has the nature of cessation will cease, because there is no second cessation, so is any mind that arises of the nature of cessation? This is what is to be stated. If the mind that has truly arisen, when it is unborn because it is the future, what is of the nature of cessation? This is what is to be asked, and the answer is: it is not so. Because the unborn is not related to any dharma, so it is said. When it has the nature of cessation, there is also no cessation, so it is said, and the answer is: it is not so. Is any mind that does not arise or cease referring to the mind of the nature of beginninglessness and endlessness? It will not cease either, because the mind is free from permanence and annihilation. Is any dharma whose own nature is cessation itself? This refers to being like a rabbit's horn that has never been assembled before. The mind that was previously said to cease, like the birth previously said, is now stated for the sake of cessation, and the answer is: it is not so. The nature of dharmas refers to emptiness. Unwavering emptiness is the nature of things (phenomena), how can it cease? If one abides in non-cessation, will it then exist forever? The answer is: this

Then, how should it be said? What is said is real, and what are these five aggregates, twelve sense bases, and eighteen realms? Will they become something different from these? Or is this also different from them, and how does it become real? Therefore, because it is not the nature of being real, it is not said to be permanent. Precisely because of this, it is said to be free from annihilation, it is the ultimate truth. Then, how are the words of the noble ones? "That is the ultimate truth, suchness is considered real, the truth is not deceiving, realizing it is called Buddha." That's how it's said. For those who say that suchness naturally appears in all circumstances, it is said to show the existence of the ultimate truth. It is explained by the reasoning of "the sound of any object, that is the meaning of the sound." Just by these, it is considered different from the aggregates, etc., this is not self, so how can it be real? Precisely because of this, the nature of the completely imputed is only nominally existent, and the dependent is real. Both exist in conventional truth. The perfectly established is existent in ultimate truth, but it is not real, this is the teaching of the noble Asanga in the "Distinguishing the Definitive and the Interpretable". Is suchness not profound? It refers to the state of being with defilements, whether form, etc., are the same as or different from suchness, it cannot be said, so it is profound. Does suchness have mind? It refers to what kind of dependent and supported relationship exists between the compounded mind and suchness together? The answer is: no. It means that the completely imputed and the perfectly established do not have a dependent and supported relationship. Is mind suchness? It refers to what is the nature of suchness of the compounded mind? The answer is: no. Because it has defilements, it is not the nature of suchness, this is a separate answer. Is it different from suchness? It refers to whether the compounded mind is different from suchness? The answer is: no. It means that the completely imputed is neither the same nor different from the perfectly established.

Because it cannot be generalized, separate answers are given. Do you truly follow and realize Suchness? This refers to that mind which arrogantly asks, assuming that it truly follows and realizes all phenomena. The answer is, "Not so." Because the state of Suchness lacks the nature of an object of focus and a focusing subject, separate answers are given. "Does it engage in the profound?" refers to the conduct of Suchness that has become like that, the meaning of which is attained through reason as profound. "It does not engage in anything" means to show that there is no engagement with it. Universal engagement refers to the characteristics as objects of focus. Not entering means unchanging. Not having universal engagement means non-manifestation. However, in order to pursue perfect enlightenment, one must engage in something in some way; otherwise, if the two accumulations are not complete, perfect enlightenment cannot be attained. What is said is that Subhuti, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, and so forth, as well as "engaging in the ultimate truth," and so on. However, Subhuti immediately said, "It does not engage in anything," therefore he said, "How does one engage in the ultimate truth?" The meaning is that with regard to engaging in the ultimate truth, whether it is "existent" or "non-existent," there is no true engagement. Engaging in that way, there is no true engagement with either of the two, so it is said, "It does not engage in anything." Because one must accomplish the absence of true engagement with the two through many efforts, it is also said, "Engaging in the ultimate truth," therefore there is no fault. In order to clarify that this non-dual nature is the conduct of the ultimate truth, it is said: "Engaging in the ultimate truth, is it engaging in characteristics?" Does it refer to the characteristics of the two, or the characteristics of non-duality? The answer is, "Not so," it is not engaging in the characteristics of the two, nor is it engaging in the characteristics of non-duality. "That characteristic" refers to the characteristics of the two and non-duality. "Is it destroyed?" refers to the question of what would happen if destruction were carried out. The answer is, "Nothing is destroyed."
