In order to attain liberation from quiescence, one is liberated from the obscurations of quiescence. In order to attain liberation through wisdom, one is liberated from the obscurations of afflictions. Those liberated from both aspects are referred to as those whose minds are extremely liberated and whose wisdom is extremely liberated. The term "knowing one" means fearless, and because of this lack of fear, the sutras speak of five kinds of knowing ones: the excellent knowing one, because there is no fear of unpleasantness such as the tongue falling out; the elephant and horse are knowing ones because there is no fear of battle; the lion is a knowing one because there is no fear of being harmed by others; and the Arhat is also called a knowing one because there is no fear of suffering. In short, there are four kinds of discomfort: the discomfort of suffering, the discomfort of fear, the discomfort of worldly concerns, and the discomfort of ignorance. Because these discomforts are absent, one is said to have attained bliss, freedom from dread, fearlessness, and relief, in that order. In this context, the absence of sorrow, lamentation, suffering, displeasure, and grief implies the absence of the discomfort of suffering. The absence of self-deprecation, the deprecation of others, the lower realms, lack of sustenance, being cut off, dismemberment, and the fear of death implies the absence of the discomfort of fear. The absence of being tainted by gain and loss, fame and infamy, praise and blame, pleasure and pain implies the absence of the discomfort of worldly concerns. The absence of ignorance, doubt, and wrong views, which obstruct one's understanding of the path, implies the absence of the discomfort of ignorance. Therefore, because of the absence of discomfort, one is called a knowing one. The term "great elephant" means great lords, some of whom possess the three kinds of knowledge, some of whom have attained individual correct knowledge, some of whom possess the six supernormal powers, some of whom possess the Dharma of understanding language, and so on, because they have attained the Dharma of superior realization.

It is called the Great Elephant. The expression "done, doing, done" indicates the complete accomplishment of what needs to be done. For example, the complete perfection of morality, concentration, and wisdom, leading to liberation from all suffering, is "doing," because it is something that must be done in any case. Living with few desires, living with contentment, living with pure limbs, living with genuine joy, and so forth, are "doing," because they are related to self-satisfaction. Therefore, the complete perfection of these is called "done, doing, done" in due order. As for "abandoning burdens," there are four kinds of burdens: the burden of the aggregates, the burden of afflictions, the burden of vows, and the burden of diligence. In order to completely abandon, eliminate, accomplish, and perfect these, the abandonment of these in due order is complete abandonment, elimination, accomplishment, and perfection. These are also due to completely knowing suffering, abandoning its origin, cultivating the path, and realizing cessation. By abandoning these, one obtains the bliss of no remainder, the bliss of liberation, the bliss of perfect enlightenment, and the bliss of peace. Therefore, merely by abandoning burdens, the qualities of obtaining the bliss of abandoning burdens are shown. As for "subsequently attaining one's own benefit," there are two ways of attaining one's own benefit: abandoning what is not beneficial and attaining benefit. Among these, abandoning ignorance and thereby abandoning all afflictive obscurations is abandoning what is not beneficial. Among these, generating wisdom and thereby realizing Nirvana is attaining benefit. As for "the complete exhaustion of all connections in existence," the connections that cause existence to arise are the connections of existence. What connects a person together with existence is bondage. Therefore, it is all connections in existence. These are of nine kinds: the connection of views, the connection of holding as supreme, the connection of doubt.
