Regarding the topics discussed, such as gatherings, if it is thought that this (sutra) is not as good as those seen in the great sutras, it is not said that this sutra is equal to them. Because of the brevity, the topic should also be brief, which is only reasonable. If someone thinks, "How is the 'sangha of one thousand two hundred and fifty bhikshus' mentioned here different from the topics of those great sutras?" Because those sutras say, "There are about five thousand bhikshus," etc. The intention here is: what appears now is done for the sake of those who like brevity, and to make them properly gather. How do those people proclaim the gathering of the bodhisattva retinue? Because it is a gathering of topics, it is the intention of those sutras. Similarly, the shravakas do not like to proclaim gatherings of large numbers. Therefore, for those who gathered about five thousand arhats, for the sake of those who like a distinctive, decisive gathering, one thousand two hundred and fifty (bhikshus) are proclaimed. Or, if this teacher is the same, then why in the two great sutras, is the story of Sadāprarudita and Dharmodgata not always told from the beginning of the previous causes, in order to make the beings to be tamed rejoice? For those who like extensiveness, the stories of previous causes are not used in their retinue. If someone asks this, then how should one believe? Because if those who like extensiveness elaborate, then why not tell the previous stories in order to greatly increase understanding and faith? For those who like brevity and prioritize understanding, it should be said here: what is shown by the previous stories is present in all the Bhagavati Mothers (teachings), however, the intention of the compiler is: to show it briefly, and for the teachings that are shown, the previous stories should also appear and be proclaimed here. The difference is not in the story itself, therefore it is not repeated. Not eating meat is also like this. Because after completing a million Bhagavati Mothers (teachings), the Bhagavan rejoiced and said so, and Maitreya was the chief...

The Bodhisattvas who have already acted, and as long as the world, including gods, humans, asuras, and gandharvas, rejoices and praises the words spoken by the Blessed One, this cannot be considered a complete recitation. The completion of the second chapter, the Twenty-Five Thousand Verses, is also the same. In the concise explanation, one should quote past stories to read, this is the intention of the Blessed One in completing this. In any case, at the completion of the Twenty-Five Thousand Verses inquired by Sudhana, the Blessed One spoke thus. This was not written down by the compiler, but was his own idea. Here, because many people establish, reverse, and recite on their own through realization, the so-called confusion is actually to clearly present the pure recitation. Except for one person, for example, the venerable Ananda, the meaning of which is: if everyone is called Arhat, then does the noble Ananda have merit, or does he not? "One" etc., the so-called "except" is excluded, generally speaking, all beings are like that, in order to distinguish the difference between merit and fault, it is said "person", in order to distinguish the particularity in the general statement, it is said "for example", these two words have not ended, the explanation is Ananda. When the Blessed One attained perfect enlightenment, the joyful goddesses were surrounded by thirty-three million hosts of demons and their rain of various weapons, the thousand Buddhas of compassion conquered them with victory, the Blessed One attained perfect enlightenment, when King Suddhodana inquired, because great joy arose, therefore he was named Ananda. The particularity of the so-called "venerable" is the meaning of abandoning contempt, therefore, from the perspective of taming, the name of the elder should be regarded as having particularity. Otherwise, the saying "being with downfall" will appear. For various special circumstances, it can also be clearly seen in the Vinaya Pitaka, for elders, one can only call them "bhikshu", but not with "venerable".
