Purity is the cause. Equanimity and mindfulness have already been discussed. The complete purity of those is that which is not closely associated with those who previously dwelt in meditative concentration, such as bliss. This, too, because of the very fact of being taught, with mindfulness, the complete purity of clear comprehension, the different fruits are not discussed. Because it is neither pleasure nor pain, feeling is there, even without awareness and so forth, the object is closely placed by equanimity, and because there is no feeling similar to that, it is said to be free from activity, and complete purity is attained by obtaining immovability. Likewise, so is mindfulness. This itself is the fruit here, not pleasure. Because pleasure is exceedingly superior. Mindfulness is not approached closely by those who possess wisdom, and also by those who are extremely attached to mere mind, because of the difference, because pleasure is completely abandoned. The nature is as before. Thus, by the faults of desire, joy, and pleasure, and by the very renunciation and peace, with regard to the object, equanimity and mindfulness are completely pure, the fourth dhyana, characterized by one-pointedness. These dhyanas are called possessing the limbs of enlightenment, and those that are supramundane are perfectly endowed with the seven limbs of enlightenment, characterized by mindfulness, the perfect discrimination of dharmas, joy, perfect pliancy, equanimity, diligence, and samadhi, and are not mundane. For those who are supramundane, the mind is not the perfect combination of the seven, because there is no extreme going forth for joy and so forth. The four immeasurables are love, compassion, joy, and equanimity, because they are the sphere of activity for limitless sentient beings in all directions, they are the immeasurables. May these sentient beings meet with happiness, this is love. May they be separated from suffering, this is compassion. May they not be separated from happiness, this is joy. May they be liberated from the afflictions of attachment to objects that are the cause of desire, and from hatred, which is the cause of desire and suffering, this is equanimity.

These are explanations of various kinds of happiness, as well as the thought of correct combination, the thought of wanting to be free from suffering, the thought of wanting to be inseparable from happiness, and the thought of being without all afflictions. The so-called four formless absorptions are: the sphere of infinite space, the sphere of infinite consciousness, the sphere of nothingness, and the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Among them, the first absorption is when all perceptions of form are completely transcended, the perception of anger is abandoned, and various perceptions are not attended to. Therefore, the so-called "infinite space" is to abide in the birthplace of the sphere of infinite space, which is the sutra. Among them, the so-called perceptions of form refer to perceptions that rely on form or have form as their object. Therefore, by abandoning the perceptions that are correctly combined with eye consciousness, anger is various kinds of harm, the perceptions of the correct combination of sound, smell, taste, and touch, and the cessation of ear, nose, tongue, and body consciousness corresponding correctly. The so-called various perceptions refer to various perceptions with various objects, and the non-attention of consciousness that corresponds correctly is because there is no correct correspondence. Infinite is immeasurable. The so-called space refers to what will definitely arise for form, and the word "space" is for the meaning that sentient beings rely on. Infinite space itself is infinity itself. This itself is the birthplace, and through the door of the birthplace, the door of consciousness is the birthplace. The so-called abiding means obtaining and realizing. The so-called dwelling means dwelling nearby. Therefore, completely transcending from the perception of form, with the object of infinite space as the goal, with the characteristic of one-pointedness of mind, the attachment to form is completely pacified, and each abides separately, which is its absorption. The second is to completely transcend the first absorption. The so-called infinite consciousness refers to the ability to recognize.
