There are three evil deeds of the body, namely killing, stealing, and engaging in sexual misconduct due to desire, these are the three wrongdoings. False speech, harsh speech, and idle chatter are the four evil deeds of speech. Greed, malice, and wrong views are the three evil deeds of the mind. There are said to be four dhyanas. The first dhyana has five branches, namely: initial application (vitarka), sustained application (vicara), joy (priti), happiness (sukha), and one-pointedness of mind (ekagrata). The second has four branches: inner tranquility (adhyatma-samprasada), joy, happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The third has five branches: equanimity (upeksha), mindfulness (smrti), clear comprehension (samprajanya), happiness, and one-pointedness of mind. The fourth has four branches: purity of equanimity, purity of mindfulness, feeling of pleasure, absence of suffering, and one-pointedness of mind. In the first dhyana, initial application and sustained application are the cause, because through arising disgust with the faults of desire, and by individually abiding with peace as the object, one obtains it through these. Initial application is characterized by directing the mind towards the object. Sustained application is characterized by truly abiding in each of the respective objects. The results are joy and happiness, because they are the nature of sustaining these. Joy is the immaculate delight that arises from overcoming desire and unwholesome dharmas. Happiness is the agreeable, intelligent pleasure and the nature of one-pointedness of mind, which is the pacification of all suffering of afflictions and is free from afflictions. The characteristic of one-pointedness of mind is having initial application and sustained application with objects such as the faults of desire. The cause of the second dhyana is inner purity, because there, initial and sustained application disturb the mind. Seeing the benefit in the absence of initial application, one obtains the true arising of great inner purity, which is the attainment of inner purity. Because coarseness has been completely eliminated, it is not through the power of initial and sustained application. It is like a stream of water that truly arises from the continuum of inner purity.

The mind abides in its own object and in that which is the cause of it. The object is the definite arising and the peaceful fruit of desires or investigation and analysis, and like the former, it is joy and happiness. However, here, investigation and analysis are victorious, and it should also be known as the faultless supreme joy, the nature of which is like the former. Thus, with desires, investigation and analysis, faults and definite arising, and peace as the object, having the nature of one-pointedness of mind, devoid of investigation and analysis, and endowed with joy and happiness, is the second dhyana. The causes of the third dhyana are equanimity, mindfulness, and clear comprehension. In all virtuous conduct, the union of the mind's equality, in harmlessness and without analysis, and abiding in the middle, whatever sees near to peace is called equanimity. In the previous dhyanas, because of joy and great joy, the mind's effort is not abandoned, because it has become defiled, therefore, equanimity is not shown near to joy, because it is not complete. Here, it is because each separately turns away from detachment. Effort becomes a limb of dhyana, and equanimity enters. Mindfulness is remembering, which is also the nature of not forgetting. Clear comprehension and mindfulness abide near mindfulness itself, which is clear comprehension, and when incomplete, mindfulness will decline. Mindfulness and clear comprehension, etc., are also the nature of not being contradictory in everything, so even if the dhyanas, etc., are also included in one, thus, it is also because it is spoken of with its own words. Abandoning joy, abandoning it with joy itself, and also when mindfulness and clear comprehension are incomplete, it is truly practicing, it should be said. Here, the fruit is happiness itself, from truly uniting with the disturbing mind, obtaining the distinction of one-pointedness, and obtaining accordance, because joy has been completely abandoned. The nature is like the former. Thus, for desires and joy, with the object of faults and definite arising and peace, having joy and the happiness of liberation, having the nature of one-pointedness of mind, is the third dhyana. The fourth dhyana is complete equanimity.
