The wisdom of the Arhat path, which is to be attained by abandoning all afflictions, is called wisdom liberation. In order to attain mind liberation, one is liberated from the obscurations of meditative absorption. In order to attain wisdom liberation, one is liberated from the obscurations of affliction. Those who are liberated from both parts are called extremely liberated in mind and extremely liberated in wisdom. The ever-awake one means fearless. Because there is no fear, five ever-awake ones are mentioned in the sutras: because there is no concern about the occurrence of discomfort such as the falling of the tongue, the best of the herd is ever-awake; because there is no fear of battle, elephants and horses are ever-awake; because there is no fear of being harmed by others, the lion is ever-awake; because there is no fear of suffering, the Arhat is also called ever-awake. In short, there are four kinds of discomfort: the discomfort of suffering, the discomfort of fear, the discomfort of worldly dharmas, and the discomfort of ignorance. Because there is no discomfort, they are called, in order, attainment of happiness, attainment of non-fear, attainment of fearlessness, and attainment of liberation. Among them, because there is no sorrow and lamentation, no suffering and displeasure, and no grief, there is no discomfort of suffering. Because there is no self-reproach, reproach by others, evil destinies, lack of livelihood, being cut off, lack of restraint, and fear of death, there is no discomfort of fear. Because one is not stained by gain and loss, fame and infamy, praise and blame, pleasure and pain, there is no discomfort of worldly dharmas. Because there is no ignorance, doubtful knowledge, and wrong views that obstruct one's own knowledge of the path, there is no discomfort of ignorance. Therefore, because there is no discomfort, one is called ever-awake. Great elephant means great lords. Some have the three knowledges, some have attained individual self-awareness, and some have the six superknowledges.

Endowed with power. Some are called great elephants because they have attained the Dharma of special and superior realization, such as the Dharma of understanding language. The phrase "what should be done has been done, what should be done has been done" indicates that accomplishment is complete. For example, liberation from all suffering through the perfection of ethics, samadhi, and wisdom is what should be done, because it is definitely what should be done. "Living with few desires, living with contentment, living with the limbs of purification, living with true joy," and so forth, are what should be done. Because it is related to self-satisfaction, through its completion, in order, what should be done has been done and what should be done has been done. As for "abandoning burdens," there are four kinds of burdens: the burden of the aggregates, the burden of afflictions, the burden of vows, and the burden of diligence. In order to completely abandon, eliminate, accomplish, and perfect, in order, the abandonment of these burdens is complete abandonment, elimination, accomplishment, and perfection. Those are also accomplished through completely knowing suffering, abandoning the origin, cultivating the path, and realizing cessation. By abandoning those, one obtains the bliss of no remainder, the bliss of liberation, the bliss of complete enlightenment, and the bliss of peace. Therefore, by merely abandoning burdens, the merit of obtaining the bliss of abandoning burdens is shown. As for "obtaining one's own benefit," there are two ways to obtain one's own benefit: abandoning what is not beneficial and obtaining benefit. Which is it that abandons all afflictive obscurations by abandoning ignorance? That is abandoning what is not beneficial. Which is it that realizes nirvana by generating wisdom? That is obtaining benefit. As for "completely exhausting the connections to existence," the connections that cause existence to arise are the connections to existence, which, together with existence, connect the individual, and are bonds. Therefore, connected to existence

are the bonds. These are also of nine types, namely: the bond of views, the bond of clinging, and the bond of doubt. These three are abandoned by the flawless correct view. The bond of jealousy, the bond of stinginess, and the bond of anger, these three, and one aspect of the bond of attachment to existence, belonging to the realm of desire, are abandoned in order to attain absorption in flawless concentration. The bond of pride, the bond of ignorance, and the bond of attachment to existence, these are abandoned by the knowledge of the path of the Arhat. Because those are completely exhausted, therefore these are called the complete exhaustion of the bonds to existence. The mind being completely liberated by completely knowing correctly is called completely knowing because of completely knowing, that is, realization. To these, the mind is completely liberated by correctly realizing. Or, here liberation refers to faith. Then, to what is there particular faith? It is to the qualities of the Three Jewels, and to the teachings of the Dharma endowed with the Three Vehicles, and to the Four Noble Truths, and to the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment. Called the mastery of all minds having reached the other shore, it refers to those minds that are masters of concentration, thereby entering into mastery. Those are the mastery of all minds having reached the other shore. Because all are, and those also are. Those have attained reaching the other shore, the other shore is ultimate. Called many refers to measuring. Because measuring goes to the ultimate of the other shore, therefore it is called the ultimate arising, which is the fault of the difficulty in establishing things. Having gone to the other shore of that noble one, how is it? Where one desires and how long one desires, in accordance with reason and contrary to reason, etc., in the order of gradually abiding, being satisfied with the nine successive absorptions, because one has obtained mastery over the individual examination of arising, such as the blessings of entering into absorption.
