It is called "like the earth" because not understanding it, one is disrespectful to the virtuous friend, and therefore one will fall away from important things like hearing. The understanding mentioned therein is "there is," meaning this exists. The three words "associating" etc. are divided according to small, medium, and large. "Subduing by force" means that with the power of going to the lower realms etc., the object of attachment itself manifests, making the nature of turning away from nirvana, making it incomplete. How is this done? It is said, "by skillful means," that is, by practicing the three doors of liberation, the pure ones become the near cause of enlightenment itself. Just as the poison of those who are sick, through mantras, the power is weakened, and it becomes beneficial to the body itself. As it is said in the Sutra of Skillful Means, the afflictions of the Bodhisattva are practiced with the wisdom of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, then all that one delights in and plays with will become enjoyment. Falling into the lower realms means not embracing. "To the Dharma-speaking Bhikshu" refers to the five kinds of Bhikshus, which refers to those who uphold the Vinaya. What are the five kinds? Named Bhikshu, vowed Bhikshu, Bhikshu of the manner of begging for food, Bhikshu for the sake of destroying afflictions, and Bhikshu who has taken full ordination through four karmas. Therefore, this is not a Bhikshu because of taking full ordination. Because Bodhisattvas abide in the precepts of Bhikshus, they will not easily obtain the enjoyment of sensual pleasures due to doubts about the doctrine. If Bodhisattvas indulge in the prohibited offenses, it is not for the benefit of those who abide in the Bhikshu's precepts. Just as taking a heap of gold the size of Mount Sumeru for the benefit of others, even so, relying on fire companions, the Bodhisattva who abides in the Bhikshu's precepts is not considered for the sake of protecting the creation of doctrinal division, this is the Bodhisattva Ground.

Thus it is done. In any case, enjoying desires, one must also consider the benefit of sentient beings, therefore, experiencing the pleasure arising from the union of the two faculties is possible. That itself is the cause of the decline of a monk's vows. The cause of not experiencing the pleasure of meditating like an illusion or a dream, and the cause of not declining a monk's vows, is not found in some scriptures. The teachers say this: If a Bodhisattva, when enjoying desires, sees a great mass of benefit for others, then, because of attachment to morality, the Bodhisattva will not be indifferent to others. As it is said in the Sutra of Skillful Means: "For the sake of benefiting others, a Bodhisattva would rather endure dwelling in hell by committing transgressions for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, than abandon the root of virtue of a single sentient being." At that time, the Bodhisattva abandons the precepts and relies on desires for the sake of guarding the solitude of the teachings, which is not reasonable and there is no opportunity. In whatever way, a Bodhisattva abiding in the vows of a monk should not approach desires. Therefore, this one is a monk because he has subdued afflictions. This one has subdued the afflictions that cast beings into the lower realms, therefore he is called a noble one. The name "monk" is commonly used for those who have entered the teachings, therefore it is specifically added to clarify the meaning of entering the teachings. In the absence of the appearance of a Buddha, Bodhisattvas may also take on the emblems of non-Buddhists, depending on those to be tamed. In the Great Mother Sutra, only the name "Bodhisattva" is mentioned, not the name "monk." Again, why is attachment to desires said to be superior to detachment from desires? Because it is for taming sentient beings, so for the sake of taming sentient beings, completely upholding and increasing the roots of virtue is for that purpose. As it is said in the Sutra of Skillful Means: "For example, O Bhagavan, with regard to Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains, whether with a pleasant mind or an angry mind,

approaching, all of them become one color. For example, having the color of gold. Similarly, O Blessed One, whoever has a peaceful mind, a malicious mind, or a completely attached mind, approaching him, all of them become one color. For example, having the color of the mind of the all-knowing one. Again, there is a type of medicine called "Pleasing to See," whoever sees sentient beings afflicted by various diseases, all those diseases will be pacified. Similarly, whoever has a peaceful mind, a malicious mind, or a completely attached mind, seeing the Bodhisattva, all those people's diseases of desire, hatred, and ignorance will be completely pacified. It is also said there: Ananda, look at how great this merit is! Because of him, other sentient beings will fall into hell, and he, people always cling to the heroes, they will go to the heavens and the human realm. And so on. Attachment is existence. Obstruction is the object. The so-called "in that very moment" refers to the time of cessation when there is no peaceful mind. The true way is the complete distinction of the ultimate truth. Because there is no complete affliction, it is not complete affliction. Because there is no complete purification, it is not complete purification. Merely clarifying emptiness is "all dharmas" and so on, through the words "no sentient beings" and so on, the selflessness of persons is explained. Through the words "like an illusion" and so on, the selflessness of phenomena is explained. To dispel the doubt of "how can a non-existent thing become an object of experience," it is just like an illusion. To dispel the doubt of "how can one enjoy liking and disliking for meaningless things," it is just like a dream. To dispel the doubt of "how do various names and expressions apply in the ultimate truth," it is just like an echo. To dispel the doubt of "how do various kinds of consciousness apply to meaningless things."
