It is called the nature of the object to be meditated upon in quiescence and the subject that meditates. The object to be meditated upon and the subject that meditates are that very thing, and it is called equality by equality. This is how it enters, it is called the ultimate truth, because there is no other dharma, therefore this is called the ultimate truth of emptiness. As it is said: Your slightest is unborn, it causes the slightest to cease. How it was before, so it is afterwards. You should realize suchness in this way. The noble ones rely on this, but do not rely on meditation. Wisdom is free from characteristics, in what way does it exist? In this Bhagavati, sons of the gods, all dharmas are like illusions and dreams. Even the perfectly complete Buddha is like an illusion and a dream. Sons of the gods, even Nirvana is like an illusion and a dream, I say. That which is said is what is shown here. As it is said: If one seeks the individual nature of dharmas, it is said to be permanent. Therefore, there is no ultimate truth, of dharmas. So it is said. How is emptiness seen in the aspect of ultimate truth, that emptiness is the ultimate truth. Again, one should think, if all dharmas are emptiness, then conditioned dharmas will also become empty. But this is not reasonable, because the accumulation of merit such as giving, obtained by countless three, but the emptiness of the conditioned, will not become enlightenment? Again, it should be determined that there is not a little other dharma called conditioned, if it exists, then it will not become conditioned. Why? That which is called conditioned arises truly after being assembled, and is made by causes and conditions, therefore it is called conditioned. If there is a little something called conditioned, then it will not be made by others. Why? No ultimate dharma can do anything. Therefore, it arises entirely from the imputation of children, therefore it becomes such, and is spoken of by such a name. Birth, abiding, and destruction, whatever is gathered

Those characteristics of conditioned phenomena are also merely nominal designations. Therefore, the basis of designation also arises only through nominal designation. Because, for the ultimate Dharma, it is not reasonable to have characteristics that exist nominally. It is not reasonable for one Dharma to have three characteristics. If the ultimate truth becomes a conditioned Dharma, then this would become the emptiness of conditioned phenomena. As it is said: 'That which depends, from which it is not born, Whose master you speak of.' Thus it is said. Thinking again, then unconditioned phenomena have an ultimate nature, because they are unconditioned. If that is not the case, with the words 'good liberation arises in the ultimate truth,' would the attainment of good Nirvana in the ultimate truth not change for Bodhisattvas? Again, ascertain it in this way: the so-called unconditioned is not another existing Dharma. The so-called unconditioned is not spoken of because of the nature of the absence of conditioned phenomena, not because it is the ultimate truth. For example, space is the characteristic of the unconditioned. Apart from this, this established characteristic does not exist. Cessation through discrimination is also the characteristic of the absence of all conditioned phenomena. Similarly, cessation not through discrimination is also called the characteristic of the destruction of conditioned phenomena. Therefore, even according to the Hearers' tradition, these are not the nature of the ultimate truth. What need is there to mention observing through the mode of emptiness? For them, realizing emptiness is called the emptiness of the unconditioned. As it is said: 'Two virtues are for the sake of attainment.' Among them, virtue refers to conditioned and unconditioned phenomena. In the Bhagavati-mother (Prajnaparamita), it is said: 'The perfection of giving increases, the perfection of giving decreases.' This does not occur for Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. However, again, this will occur in this way: this is merely a name. For example, all that is called the perfection of giving, and so on. Similarly, Bhagavan, for the unspeakable meaning, what increase or decrease is there?
