Therefore, it is said to be without inherent existence. Because it is without inherent existence, it is emptiness. Therefore, the meaning of being without inherent existence is dependent origination, and the meaning of emptiness is said to be dependent origination. As it is said: Whatever is dependent origination, you call that emptiness. When the correct view arises, the mantra of ignorance is completely pacified. At that time, those phenomena like elephants, the phenomena of consciousness that grasp them, and dependent origination will all disappear by themselves. Therefore, the emptiness of the container world and so on, which abide here, is called the great emptiness. Again, the Bodhisattva should think like this: Emptiness, in the form of a dharma, is it existent or non-existent? While contemplating, it will transform like this: Just as someone sees a city of Gandharvas, and the thought of a city arises, but later, when searching, it cannot be found, and the thought of the city disappears, and the thought of emptiness arises. Therefore, after the thought of emptiness arises, can one say that there is some other thing existing, saying that the city is empty? Similarly, here too, from seeing the nature of imputed forms and so on, the thought of dharma arises, but later, when thoroughly searching as it is, seeing with the wisdom of as it is, the thought of dharma disappears, and the thought of emptiness arises. Thus, can one say that there is another dharma existing, saying emptiness? As it is said: Because all conceptualizations are abandoned, the nectar of emptiness is taught. Whoever clings to that as well, you have diminished it. Therefore, emptiness does not mean non-existence, because all phenomena are empty, so it cannot be said that emptiness exists either. If it is said that the emptiness that is practiced, there is no other slight dharma existing, this is emptiness emptiness. Emptiness is...

In this sutra, by what wisdom does one know that form, etc., are emptiness? It is precisely the emptiness of that which is contained within the aggregate of consciousness, which is the nature of inner self, that is being spoken of. Therefore, it is taught by itself. Here, this meaning should be understood. Emptiness also has three aspects: the completely imputed, the dependent, and the thoroughly established. Among these, the completely imputed is like a rabbit's horn, not found anywhere at all. It is not the nature of what is grasped, nor is it the appearance of the consciousness that grasps. The thoroughly established is the wisdom consciousness that abides in the nature of being an object of equality by equality, and an object and subject of observation, and is the domain of all Buddhas in every way. With this, the sixteen aspects of emptiness are the domain of the wisdom with which Bodhisattvas are familiar. For the wisdom that directly realizes, the nature of non-apprehension of all phenomena is only one emptiness; it is not one, two, or three, etc. In order to increase the cultivation of non-apprehension of all phenomena, Bodhisattvas discern the aspects of emptiness, which have been increased by insight, with the wisdom of non-meditative equipoise. Therefore, it is not directly realized by the conceptualization of the cause called calm abiding. If one asks, what then does calm abiding not give rise to? The answer is: because compassion does not abandon samsara completely, the mind becomes weary. That is because, not having perfected the accumulations, one directly realizes the extreme of reality and, like the Hearers, will completely pass beyond sorrow. Therefore, all these perfections are created as conventional truths, like sowing seeds in the sky, they do not produce emptiness. Therefore, this son of the Victorious One will directly realize the extreme of reality, completely obstructed by compassion, if this does not happen. Thus it is said. In this very text it is said: This is the time to become completely familiar, not the time to directly realize. Therefore, one should bind the mind closely to the object of meditative equipoise. Thus, familiarity...

At the time of the ground, the remaining nature of other-dependence, emptiness also exists, and that is also called the nature of consciousness. Without consciousness, it does not exist. Without consciousness, the venerable Shariputra, consciousness is separate from the nature of consciousness, so it is said. As it is said: Whoever sees it, whoever speaks of it, that is not within. This is the emptiness of emptiness. Think again, does even the ultimate truth of Dharma not exist? If it is emptiness, how is it its ultimate truth? How does the Vajra-like Samadhi of the Buddhas focus on it? If it exists, then similarly all dharmas exist, can this be established? Again, ascertain in this way: Ultimate truth, no dharma exists, any state of accomplishment of the Tathagatagarbha, that is not the nature of Dharma, it cannot be said to exist. Because it is established as the characteristic of the absence of both the apprehended and the apprehender of the completely imputed. Because of the characteristic of non-existence, it cannot be said to exist. It also cannot be said to be non-existent, because it does not exist by the nature of being free from duality. If it is said to exist, because it exists by the nature of a real thing, it will fall into the extreme of addition. If it is said to be non-existent? Like a rabbit's horn, because it will be established as extremely non-existent, it will fall into the extreme of denial. Therefore, neither can be said, therefore it is similar to non-existence. The Vajra-like Samadhi focuses on it, whatever is said, that is also the non-conceptual transcendental wisdom of the Buddhas, not even slightly focused on. However, in beginningless samsara, previously accustomed to the nature of grasping, at that time, even if there is no taking from the nature of the self of the knower, it is approximated that one is acting while grasping one's own self. This is its equality.
