That is what is meant. In order to eliminate the misconception of grasping external objects as edible, the emptiness of externality is established. Grasping as edible also arises from the conceptualizations of externalists who grasp at forms and so on, as well as those who practice this Dharma and grasp at the nature of objects themselves. Among these, in order to eliminate the former, it is said, "Form is empty, because there is no self or what belongs to self." In order to eliminate the latter, it is said, "Form is empty of form, sound is empty of sound," and so on, as before. Thus, for external objects, being free from self and what belongs to self, and those objects themselves being free from the characteristics of their own nature and the nature of phenomena, this is called the emptiness of externality. The Blessed Mother said in this sutra, "Form itself is completely separated from the nature of form," which refers to this. When establishing the aggregates, the five faculties, namely eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, and the five objects, namely form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, are called form because they each destroy their respective objects. Among these, for internal forms and so on, there is only the emptiness of internality. The form that can be apprehended by the eye, and the sound and so on that can be apprehended by various characteristics, do not exist, and this is the emptiness of externality. As it is said in the sutra, "Form is empty of its own nature of form," again, with this statement, it is prevented here that external sources of birth are thought of as edible. Thus, having abandoned the profound and edible conceptualizations of internal and external, and also having abandoned the thought of self and what belongs to self for the body which is the nature of the aggregation of internal and external sources of birth, therefore, if one thinks in this way: this aggregation of internal and external sources of birth is also empty of the nature of self and what belongs to self, this is the emptiness of internal and external. Again, think in this way: if all phenomena are empty, then how can one see the arising of phenomena such as stability and movement? Again, ascertain in this way: the so-called dependent arising does not mean that any phenomenon exists, but rather because something is absent, phenomena can exist as they are.

As long as direct realization is not seen, karma and afflictions, with their fully ripened nature, exist in the manner of beginningless cause and effect. The fully ripened results of karma and afflictions are also empty in all ways. Therefore, the existence of empty phenomena in the nature of cause and effect of emptiness is called dependent origination. For example, a magician binds the sight of beings with a magic spell, thereby showing elephants and so on. For those whose sight is bound, those magical elephants and so on become the cause for generating consciousness that appears as their own manifestation. Those consciousnesses also see those magical elephants and so on. The existence of elephants and so on and consciousness in the manner of cause and effect is called dependent origination. None of these three actually exist in reality. Similarly, for children, because ignorance binds their sight, phenomena of karma, crafts, and conceptual constructs are seen like magical elephants and so on. Those phenomena become the cause for generating consciousness that appears as their own manifestation. Those consciousnesses see those phenomena. Therefore, since the external phenomena of conceptual constructs exist in the manner of cause and effect, they do not actually exist in reality. Precisely for this reason, phenomena are said to be without inherent existence. If there were some uncreated, co-emergent inherent existence in phenomena, then they would arise by their own nature. They would not need to depend on other causes and conditions to arise. Dependence would also be futile, and therefore it would be understood that they do not have inherent existence. Precisely for this reason, it is said: How can something with inherent existence arise again? Because inherent existence is uncreated, it does not depend on others. Like that. Because these things do not have inherent existence, therefore
