When one cherishes those sentient beings who possess afflictions with boundless compassion, those who are in accordance with the virtuous path, such as the Sangha and Kundgarawa, abandon the easily obtainable necessities of life there, go to places far from sentient beings to consume food, and completely liberate themselves from suffering, not encountering sentient beings. This is what is meant by (afflictionlessness). As it is said: 'The Hearer views afflictions, but does not completely abandon afflictions.' Thus it is said. Even so, the wisdom of the nature that follows the absence of afflictions in the continuum of others is without afflictions. The samadhi of loving-kindness, which is the obstacle to all afflictions for sentient beings, is called without afflictions. Furthermore, in the commentary on the Twenty Thousand Verses, it is said that the Hearer Vehicle, with its samadhi that is completely purified from the realm of afflictionlessness, is called the samadhi of afflictionlessness. There, it should also be understood as being contrary to the realm of afflictions in the continuum of others, otherwise, what special distinction would be spoken of for those who abide in afflictionlessness? This is the explanation of afflictionlessness according to the Hearer Vehicle. Here, all the elaborations of conceptual thought are afflictions, and because these are absent, the samadhi that is free from conceptual thought is afflictionlessness. Because one abides in this, it is said to abide in afflictionlessness. The meaning is this: For those sentient beings who are of uncertain lineage and dull faculties, the Tathagata, knowing that they are not qualified for the practice of true enlightenment in the realm of afflictions that have not been abandoned, first causes them to abide in the state of Arhatship. Then, the Bodhisattva Vehicle is taught to them, so that they may develop the intention to be able to fully accomplish the practice of a Bodhisattva, and then gradually obtain tolerance for the profound Dharma. Thus, for those who have a definite intention for the state of Buddhahood and who have separately obtained tolerance for the profound Dharma realm that is separately distinguished, the Tathagata...

For the sake of the Buddha, predictions are made, and their initial position is the path of seeing, residing in the eighth ground. Just as the path outside the Hearer Vehicle abandons desire for desire in the desire realm, in the path of seeing, one is a Non-Returner. Similarly, in the Holy Lotus Sutra of the Good Dharma, the prediction for perfect complete enlightenment, residing in the eighth ground, spontaneously accomplished, the non-conceptual Bodhisattva Mahasattva is a Dwelling Bodhisattva. Thereafter, by not generating the realm of afflictions, one is superior to the Hearers who dwell in non-affliction. Similarly, due to the absence of mind, as stated in the scriptures, the Dwelling Bodhisattva is said to be the most excellent of those who dwell in non-affliction, so the praise of being "steadfast" is reasonable. Since one does not generate the realm of afflictions, there is no need for anything from the chief. Now, the Dwelling Shariputra, with "Well done" and praises, explicitly praises, which is to show the characteristics and benefits of non-retrogression to the Bodhisattva who possesses diligence. Therefore, one should closely examine non-retrogression with "because" and so on. One should apprehend with non-retrogression. From the first arising of the mind called the Ground of Great Joy, in order to realize the nature of all phenomena of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, having surpassed the grounds of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, one is said to become non-retrogressive. Without being separated from the Perfection of Wisdom, one should also recognize the nature of not being conceited about all phenomena. Now, for the Perfection of Wisdom, the grounds of Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas, and all the trainings of perfect complete enlightenment are also beneficial, and it makes them stable. As in "In the Hearer Ground" and so on, the place where the Hearer's enlightenment-achieving dharmas are cultivated is the Hearer Ground or realm, which can also be called a ground. By relying on what as a basis will that wisdom arise in them? Similarly, there is also the Buddha Ground. Here too, it is for the sake of generating expertise in the three vehicles for the Bodhisattvas.
