Therefore. What dharma is said to cease by its very nature is like the horns of a rabbit that have never been assembled before. Is what was previously said about the cessation of mind spoken for the sake of ceasing now as it arose before? That is not so. The suchness of dharmas is emptiness. Emptiness, which is immovable, is the nature of things. How can it cease? If it abides in non-cessation, will it always change? It is said: 'What do you think?' and so on. Subhuti reported: 'As is suchness, so it remains.' The meaning is that suchness, emptiness, and suchness are different names. 'It does not change without being permanent' means that if there is no birth and death, and the nature of dharma that always exists becomes permanent, will it become eternal? He reported: 'That is not so.' If the nature of all dharmas, suchness, always truly exists, will it turn into an extreme of annihilation after knowing it? As it is said: 'Non-duality is without things. Existence is the characteristic of emptiness.' That is so. Even so, because it is not the essence of substance, it is not right to say that permanent existence is eternal. But how can it be said that it exists in the ultimate sense and is not a substance? It is said that there is substance, and what will change from these five aggregates, twelve sources, and eighteen realms, or how will this also be different from them and become a substance? Therefore, because it is not the nature of substance, it is not said to be permanent. Therefore, it is said to be the ultimate truth, free from the extreme of annihilation. So, what are the words of the noble ones? 'That is the ultimate truth, suchness is considered a substance, truth is not deceiving, realizing it is called Buddha.' That is so. In order to show the existence of the ultimate truth to those who say that suchness appears in all aspects after knowing it, it is said in that way. It is based on the reasoning that 'the sound of which object is the meaning of the sound.' With just these
