Whatever is apprehended as an object, by its very nature, already refutes the reality of external phenomena. Moreover, such appearances are all conceptual constructs and superimposed elaborations. Then, where, by what means, or how does that which is conceptualized exist? This indicates that the apprehended object, in some instances, does not truly exist with any inherent nature. Therefore, this negation is directed at conceptualizations, not at things that are fully established, because it actually exists. Thus, sound has a reason. Because it is so, for other statements as well, especially those that primarily negate other things, one must also negate the so-called 'negation,' that is, one must understand that the negation is to eliminate conceptualizations, which must be ascertained. All of this indicates that it should be understood that this is to eliminate the conceptual thought of superimposition. Now, by stating 'by emptiness,' etc., one refutes those who are distracted by the aspect of imputation. Because in the Mother Prajnaparamita Sutra, the Blessed One said, 'Emptiness is not empty,' therefore, such statements, such as declaring 'emptiness is empty by emptiness,' or 'separate from emptiness,' etc., are all to establish things, and in all cases, in every way, to again refute the imputation of conceptual thought, the Blessed One has declared that by the nature of 'emptiness is not empty,' etc., one eliminates, that is, refutes. It is not enough to refute the imputation of conceptual thought with this single phrase; similarly, it should also be understood that the phrase 'Buddha is like an illusion, also like a dream' can also abandon the imputation of conceptual thought. The word 'similarly' means connecting with the previous. 'Like an illusion' refers to that which has an illusion as an example, that is, like an illusion. Whose is it? It is the Buddha's. The Buddha is like an illusion, and the word 'also' is cumulative, also like a dream, this is a summarizing term.

Therefore. For what reason, the term "Buddha" here refers to non-dual wisdom. Although that (wisdom) inherently exists even in the consciousness of ordinary beings, etc., its nature, obscured by the illusion of ignorance, is merely invisible to children, etc. Thus, the one who teaches by blending them together in this way says: This principle should be understood by the wise, even in other statements. This is what it means. This very way of explaining should be understood. By whom should it be understood? By the wise, that is, by those who are discerning. Where should it be understood? Also in other statements, such as, "All phenomena are like illusions." There also, it should be understood only as dispelling imputational conceptualizations. Furthermore, how should this just-mentioned point be understood? The statement is, for what reason? Because the Victorious One, with a common basis, thoroughly declares (things) to be like illusions. This is what it means. If, moreover, non-dual wisdom were entirely non-existent everywhere, then teaching by means of a common basis would be inappropriate. What is the reason? Because illusions, etc., are entirely non-existent, and the Buddha is existent. Furthermore, the words such as "like illusions" also express dependence on others. The word "etc." includes dreams, etc. The word "also" has the meaning of a reason, because the words such as "like illusions" express and speak of dependence on others, and it is taught by the Bhagavan. "Dependence on others" means being under the control of others, being taken as self by ignorance. Based on this situation, it is also said that the Buddha is like an illusion, but the naturally pure is not entirely non-existent in all respects. Therefore, it is appropriate to say that the Buddha is like an illusion, etc. This also renders groundless the imputational conceptualization that imputes that all sentient beings do not have the Tathagatagarbha and that non-dual wisdom does not exist in all respects. This is the condensed meaning. If, in ultimate reality, non-dual consciousness is the Tathagata, then how can the consciousness of ordinary beings also have that name?

Saying "saying" is proposed because of doubt, such as "whatever is the knowledge of ordinary beings," and so on. Whatever is the knowledge of ordinary beings, whose nature is pure by nature, is declared and indicated by the voice of the Buddha. Such dualistic knowledge is generally spoken of in this way. Or it is spoken of in this way after careful examination. For example, just as a Bodhisattva is like a Buddha, because he has dualistic knowledge, so the Bodhisattva is called a Buddha, that is the meaning. Or because it is the cause, the Bodhisattva is called a Buddha. If, like the Buddhas, ordinary beings also have such knowledge, why does it not appear? It is said, "Because of ignorance," and so on. The consciousness associated with ordinary beings, although its nature is dualistic, is controlled by ignorance and clung to as self, so its own nature, that is, the nature of self, is completely obscured, and although it is dualistic in nature, it appears as other, appearing as dualistic in nature. For example, like an illusion, an illusion itself has no nature, but appears as a thing, and so is consciousness. This is to say that if someone says that even the nature of the consciousness of infants and others is inherently dualistic enlightenment, then, because it is completely obscured by the inversion of the grasper and the grasped, the consciousness of infants and others does not understand, but at all times, the Tathagatas understand, because there is no defilement. If this is the case, then, since it is bound by ignorance at all times, it can never be without defilement, and if there is such doubt, then it is said: Abandon the fruit like a dream. It is said that whatever is the knowledge that is pure by nature, even if it is controlled by ignorance, but through listening and thinking, etc., wisdom is obtained, and the meaning of the untrue can be revealed.
