Thus it was said. Because it is the antidote to various harms, the absence of harm arising from internal Dharma is called being without anger. Thus it was said. The absence of harm done by external sentient beings is called being without rivals. Thus it was said. The absence of harm arising from external objects and actions is called being without harm, because there is no harm from desire, poison, fire, and so on. The so-called four dhyanas, of which detachment from desires means being detached from afflictive desires and desires for objects, because one is detached from what is in accordance with them and detached from the object of focus. Being detached from sinful and unwholesome dharmas means those that arise from the cause of afflictive desire, belonging to misconduct of body, speech, and mind, including punishing with penalties, stabbing with weapons, fighting, arguing, quarreling, deceptive words, harm, lying, and so on. Because one does not see faults in conceptualization and analysis, the antidote to desire that is in accordance with these two is detachment from desire, or because detachment from obscurations arises, it arises from detachment. Having obtained the meaning of desire, having separated from all bad migrations, body and mind become extremely subdued, and because of being capable, one possesses joy and happiness. The second dhyana refers to seeing faults in the characteristics of samadhi that are accompanied by conceptualization and analysis, thereby turning the mind away from that, and for the characteristics of samadhi that are without conceptualization and without analysis, the mind draws near and separates from the object of focus that is engaged in distraction, thereby abiding in a mind that is peaceful and extremely subdued in one way of engaging in the object of focus with one-pointedness of mind. Therefore, it is said that it is free from conceptualization and analysis, and the inner mind is completely subdued. Thus, by abiding the mind closely, one transcends the state of being accompanied by conceptualization and analysis, having gaps and having obstacles, and through familiarizing oneself with meditation, one will attain a state of being without gaps and without obstacles. Therefore, it is said that the mind stream becomes one, called ground. Various

Having completely abandoned all that is with investigation and with analysis, therefore it is without investigation and without analysis. In the third dhyana, because of being separated from the desire for joy, abiding in equanimity, and being mindful and possessing clear awareness, because the body experiences happiness, when thinking about whether "abiding in equanimity" and "experiencing happiness" are contradictory, in order to demonstrate that these two are not contradictory, the meditator abandons investigation and analysis as well as joy, therefore abides in equanimity without obstruction. Furthermore, in order not to distinguish the opportunity for thoughts associated with joy, therefore mindfulness is present. Practitioners also abide greatly in wisdom because they never accept it again at any time. Therefore, it is called having mindfulness and clear awareness. Thus abiding greatly in equanimity, having abandoned the feeling associated with joy that distracts the mind, a feeling of no joy, peaceful, and extremely peaceful arises, and at that time, the happiness of the body of form and the body of mind, as well as the happiness of extreme pliancy, will be experienced. Therefore, it is called experiencing happiness with the body. What the noble ones say, "Whoever has mindfulness, abides in happiness, is an equanimous one," means that the lower two dhyanas do not have such happiness and equanimity, and the upper dhyana has equanimity but no happiness. Therefore, this third dhyana is the place of happiness and equanimity, so the noble Buddhas and the Buddha's Shravakas mainly say that this meditator is an equanimous one, abiding in happiness, and possessing mindfulness. In the fourth dhyana, "also abandoned happiness" means that the fourth dhyana shows that it has abandoned the happiness associated with the third dhyana. "Previously also abandoned suffering" means that it also includes what was abandoned by the second dhyana. "Previously" and "due to the disappearance of mental pleasure" refer to showing the abandonment of joy in the third dhyana. "Due to the disappearance of unpleasantness" refers to showing what was abandoned by the second dhyana. Equanimity, mindfulness, and clear awareness are extremely
