They do not generate attachment. For example, when some people look at a village or a city, if they think, "I should stay here," when they look like that, they will develop attachment to that place, and the attachment will turn into something else. If they think, "I should go somewhere else," when they look like that, their minds will change to something else. Similarly, here, if one wants to attain perfect and complete enlightenment, then the desire for nirvana will turn into something else, and the definite Shravakas will also turn into something else. Therefore, even if they have abandoned afflictions, some people will become different due to the influence of habits and so on. Due to the influence of compassion, they will not become very tired of samsara. Those who want to benefit sentient beings are like someone who wants to pull a young child who has fallen into a pit of filth, and even if they look at the pit of filth, they will not become disgusted by it. Those who have become learners or non-learners in this way will, with the instructions of the Tathagata, completely dedicate the roots of virtue that are beyond the world, without outflows, and the noble path, in this way: "May all my roots of virtue that are beyond the world and without outflows manifestly turn towards being born in samsara for the benefit of sentient beings." They will completely dedicate in this way. Due to the power of their complete dedication in this way, they will be born in samsara through the roots of virtue without outflows, such as the path. For them, there are also virtuous dharmas similar to afflictions that become the cause of co-creation. For example, in other sutras, it is said that the Ocean of Wisdom (referring to Bodhisattvas) continues samsara, and what are the afflictions that accompany the roots of virtue? For example, not being satisfied with seeking the accumulation of merit, consciously upholding being born in existence, wishing to meet the Buddhas, not being tired of maturing sentient beings, diligently upholding the true Dharma, being delighted in thinking about what actions there are for sentient beings, not abandoning the habit of desiring the Dharma, and not giving up the connection with the Paramitas. Ocean of Wisdom, these are the afflictions that accompany the roots of virtue. Those Bodhisattvas, even if they are ghosts, also...

They are not tainted by the faults of afflictions. I beseech you, Blessed One, if it is a root of virtue, why do you speak of afflictions? The Blessed One said: Ocean of Intelligence, in this way, afflictions mix Bodhisattvas with the three realms. Since the three realms arise from afflictions, Bodhisattvas are skillful in means, and through increasing the power of the roots of virtue, they intentionally mix with the three realms. Therefore, it is called afflictions that are equal to the roots of virtue. Because they are mixed with the three realms, it is said that the mind is not close to afflictions. Therefore, through the power of such complete dedication, the uncontaminated roots of virtue are born in samsara. For those who do not return or Arhats, through increasing the power of samadhi, because they possess extraordinary direct perception, they show various manifestations of birth, doing immeasurable benefit to sentient beings, and perfecting the accumulation of enlightenment, this is called the birth of manifestation. Some, through the power of relying on virtuous friends, have accumulated such special aspirations from the beginning. Their aspirations mature and accomplish the birth of complete dedication, this is called the birth of complete dedication. Then, why do they not attain the fruits of stream-entry, etc., and not perfect the accumulation of enlightenment? Because they do not. Because they have strong afflictions and dull faculties, they need to tame their faculties, and without abandoning afflictions, they cannot perfect the accumulation of enlightenment. Therefore, the Tathagata skillfully makes them possess such supreme power. As it is said in other sutras: Blessed One, how should we view the predictions of the Tathagata for the Shravakas to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, my predictions for the Shravakas to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment are based on their potential.

I have taught. I beseech you, Blessed One! How can the Hearers who have eliminated defilements, severed the continuum of all connections in existence, though they possess lineage, attain complete and perfect enlightenment and become Buddhas? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, listen, I will give an example. Son of good family, for example, a king, born into a royal lineage, crowned from the head, has a son. He also learns in all fields of craftsmanship. If he is dull-witted and not sharp-witted, he learns what should be learned later first, and what should be learned first later. Son of good family, what do you think? Because of that, can it be said that he is the king's son? I beseech you, Blessed One, it is not so. Sugata, it is not so. Blessed One, he is indeed the king's son. Son of good family, likewise, a Bodhisattva, Dull-witted, possessing lineage, first exhausts all defilements through the path of gradual meditation, and then attains complete and perfect enlightenment and becomes a Buddha. Son of good family, what do you think? Because of that, can it be said that he has not attained complete enlightenment? I beseech you, Blessed One, it is not so. Sugata, it is not so. Such are the words spoken. Therefore, in this way, one is born by the power of the three kinds of birth and perfects the accumulation of enlightenment.
