The emptiness of internal and external objects is the third emptiness. What is the emptiness of all dharmas? That which becomes empty by that emptiness is called the emptiness of emptiness. Because emptiness is it, and emptiness itself is it, therefore it is called the emptiness of emptiness. What is empty? It is the emptiness of all dharmas, it is said to be empty by emptiness. How will it appear as stated? For emptiness, there is no other second emptiness, it is only empty by its own nature, this is its synonym. The east is empty by the east, the emptiness of the great dharmas is called great emptiness because it is greatness itself, this is a synonym for pervading all directions. Because there is no permanence and no destruction, nirvana is also empty by nirvana, this is empty by the nature of ultimate nirvana. Can't we say that nirvana is permanent? Some hearers of the Hearer Vehicle with realization do not think so, but in the ultimate sense, there is no dharma called nirvana. Conditioned phenomena refer to the three realms, and it is said so because all conditioned phenomena belong to the three realms. For things that have no birth, no cessation, no destruction, no abiding, and no change, the arising of dharmas is birth, the cessation of continuity is cessation, the destruction in one instant is destruction, the uninterrupted continuation of continuity is abiding, and the difference between the before and after of continuity is change. For the dharma that does not have these dharmas, it is called unconditioned dharma. Space, Suchness, the two cessations, and these dharmas are not present in the substance of unconditioned dharmas, so it is called unconditioned emptiness. It is only showing the extreme of annihilation and the extreme of permanence, therefore the extremes of things and non-things, dharmas and non-dharmas, existence and non-existence, etc., are all included here. For things that do not have a visible beginning and end, it is without a middle.

The term "without beginning and end" and so forth, "beginning" refers to the prior limit. "End" refers to the subsequent limit. Alternatively, "end" refers to the initial limit. "Beginning" refers to the later limit, and because those two limits do not exist, the middle also does not exist. Therefore, for the emptiness of without beginning, without end, and without middle, it is called "emptiness of without beginning and end." Or, those very things that are without beginning, without end, and without middle, because they are empty of without beginning, without end, and without middle, are called "emptiness of without beginning and end." The term "unabandoned emptiness" is like how a previously taken river, if the field is gone, the vase becomes empty. Similarly, the establishment of emptiness is present in this abandoning and relinquishing of things that previously arose in ultimate truth. The non-existence of the inherent nature of phenomena is the definition of emptiness. Among these, "unabandoned is empty of unabandoned" means that there is no phenomenon that is unabandoned. The term "self-nature emptiness" refers to the emptiness of the self-nature, the dharma-nature, of conditioned and unconditioned things, which was not made or created by hearers, solitary realizers, tathagatas, or anyone. Therefore, it is called "self-nature." The self-nature of all phenomena is also empty of self-nature. If a subject existed, then its self-nature would also have to be established. Like this, if even the subject itself does not exist, then whose self-nature would it be appropriate to call it? This is its definition. Therefore, it is said that self-nature is empty of self-nature. The term "all phenomena are empty of all phenomena" means that, in ultimate truth, all phenomena do not have the inherent nature of all phenomena. The term "own-characteristic emptiness" means that if phenomena do not exist, then by what would these become their own characteristics? Therefore, all phenomena are merely conceptual constructs, so these characteristics are also conceptual constructs, and therefore do not exist. This is its definition. The term "unobservable emptiness" refers to the fact that phenomena realized in the three times do not exist as the nature of the three times, which is unobservable. That unobservable also
