Satva. Previously, in the state where the Tathagatagarbha coexists with defilements, due to the fully conceptualized, phenomena arise, cease, become completely afflicted, and become completely purified. Those that arise appear, and after appearing, they become objects in that way, and they manifest and act in that way. In the state without defilements, the arising of all phenomena does not exist in the Tathagatagarbha. Because there is no arising, there is also no cessation. Because there are no defilements, there is no complete affliction, no complete purification, and no appearance. Because there is no appearance, there is no object. Because there is no object, there is no manifestation or action. This is called extremely pure. The saying "there is no learning for any dharma" means that in the state without defilements, because all phenomena are not seen, it is said that these phenomena do not exist in that way. To show that it does not exist as the nature of the fully conceptualized, it is said, "Shariputra, how it does not exist, so it exists." To show that the fully conceptualized things exist in the nature of the inexpressible in the form of non-existence, it is said that it does not exist in that way, therefore it is called ignorance. Like the consciousness in a dream, because the self is not truly as it is, it clings to other non-existent things even when it does not exist. Or, it is not truly knowing, recognizing and understanding what is not true, which is the definition of ignorance. World Honored One, for what reason is ignorance called what does not exist? Shariputra, (you) asked: For what reason is ignorance called what does not exist? (Buddha) replied: Shariputra, form does not exist, and so on. The meaning is like this: Like this, form and other dharmas do not exist and are not real, but they cling as if they really exist, therefore, that is not truly knowing, because it is not truly understood, it is called ignorance. To show this, form and other dharmas were proclaimed. To clarify this point, it is said, "Therefore, children cling due to ignorance and craving, and cling to the two extremes." This means that due to the power of ignorance, they cling to the form of existence, and due to the power of craving.
