Thus it is. Like the Samkhyas, they conceive of a self that is extremely subtle, pervasive, and imperceptible, and they think that there is a self that is different from form and so on. Therefore, would they think that something other than form is a Bodhisattva? Would they think that something other than feeling is a Bodhisattva? And so on. Similarly, like the Lokayatas and others, they conceive that there is a being the size of a thumb or the size of a grain of barley, and they think that this person dwells in the body of the aggregates. Therefore, would they think that there is a Bodhisattva in form? Would they think that there is a Bodhisattva in feeling? And so on. Similarly, like owls and others, they believe that impermanence of form and so on dwells in the permanent person, and they think that form and so on dwell in the self, and they conceive of it as an object of dwelling. Therefore, would they think that a Bodhisattva has form? Would they think that a Bodhisattva has feeling? And so on. Similarly, some who speak of Ishvara and others think that there is something called Ishvara that is extremely subtle and difficult to understand, and they think that there is something different from the nature of form and so on. Therefore, would they think that formlessness is a Bodhisattva? Would they think that feelinglessness is a Bodhisattva? And so on. Considering that all these discriminations are not in accordance with reason, the Blessed One, taking the five aggregates, the six elements, the twelve sources, the eighteen realms, and the twelve limbs of dependent origination as a basis, asked them separately, and the Venerable Subhuti replied, "Blessed One, it is not so." Then the Blessed One said, "If this Bodhisattva has a different dharma, then is it conditioned or unconditioned? If it is conditioned, then it should be an object of the five aggregates and so on, but it is not an object. If you admit that it is unconditioned, then to dispel this doubt, still taking the suchness of the aggregates and so on as a basis, Subhuti, what do you think, what is the suchness of form, is that the Bodhisattva?"

He asked questions such as, "Is it a Bodhisattva?" Then, the Venerable Subhuti summarized the suchness of the aggregates, elements, sense bases, and dependent origination, these differences and aggregations. He thought that if a Bodhisattva possessed these, then a single Bodhisattva would have immeasurable and countless self-natures, and there is no such reasoning. So he said, "It is not, O Bhagavan," and thus negated that as well. Then, the Bhagavan again asked Subhuti, "Is it because you closely hold to the power of meaning that you say that?" When asked for the reason, the Bhagavan said, "Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva is utterly non-existent and invisible, then how can form be said to be a Bodhisattva?" and so on. Just as with a rabbit's horn and a barren woman's son, one makes discriminations about long and short, white and black, blue and green, etc., so too, from a being that is utterly non-existent, the self-nature of form and other conditioned phenomena, or the self-nature of suchness, which is unconditioned, does not exist. This is the concluding statement. Here, "How can the suchness of form be seen as an object?" is a concluding statement meaning "How can the suchness of form become a self-nature?" Having negated all self-natures in this way, in order to conclude the Bhagavan's teaching on the invisibility of beings, he said, "Subhuti, well done, well done. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva should train in the Perfection of Wisdom in this way, in the invisibility of beings." Then, the Venerable Holy Subhuti, again, in the manner of previously asking about terms, in order to show that a Bodhisattva seems to exist, asked, "O Bhagavan, what kind of dharma is the term 'Bodhisattva'?" Some people think like this: even if a Bodhisattva does not have the self-nature of the aggregates, etc., in the ultimate sense, in the conventional sense, there is a self-nature imputed upon the aggregates, etc. Therefore, in order to show that this imputation is also non-existent, and after that, in order to show the teaching of invisible terms, the Bhagavan seized upon the very word that was asked, saying, "Subhuti, what about that?"
