Grasping the words, "I have not truly seen the dharma of the earth," the Blessed One said, "Subhuti, the realm of dharma is not truly seen," and so on. Subhuti, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should practice the Perfection of Wisdom without clinging to all dharmas in this way, up to the ultimate sutras, which all show non-attachment to all dharmas, and thereby give instruction. This is the instruction of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva on the Perfection of Wisdom. It is concluded with the statement, "This is the subsequent teaching," with these four instructions. Among them, in the previously mentioned instruction on names and designations, it is shown that this is merely a name, and that there is no other dharma that has become a name. Furthermore, this name is neither within, nor without, nor is it perceived as being without both. This explains the reason why a name does not become another dharma. If there were some name that became another dharma, then it should be observable from within, without, or from something other than those two. Like this, if one were to thoroughly examine all three of these, it would be unreasonable, and therefore it does not exist. Here also there is an example that accords with the dharma, Subhuti, for example, although one verbally says sentient being, sentient being, no sentient being is actually observed, and so on. Then, the second reason why a name does not become another dharma is stated: the dharma that is examined has no arising or ceasing, except as a mere designation and imputation of names. If the name of dharmas were to become another dharma, then when the dharma called "is" arises, it should also arise, but in reality, it does not arise. Like this, in order to be able to impute, one clearly indicates to others in the manner of designation, "The name of this is this." If the name arose at the very time that the dharma arose, then others, upon seeing it, should be able to understand "The name of this is this" because they do not understand the designation, but in reality, they would not understand. Therefore, the dharma

Even if there is birth, the name does not arise; even if the Dharma ceases, the name does not cease. Here, even though the object called 'name' ceases, the name is used as a linguistic term and does not disappear. Therefore, there is no transformation into another Dharma without birth and cessation, just as 'self' and 'sentient beings' are merely terms, as has been shown. Here, again, four types of Dharma are taken as examples: because they are merely terms, what is known in the Hearer's vehicle are 'self' and 'sentient beings,' etc.; because they are merely completely imputed, what is known in the Bodhisattva's vehicle are the aggregates, elements, and sense bases; because they are merely names applied based on close association, what is known to both are the distinctions of inner and outer, such as the body and plants; and because they are completely non-existent, what is known to all the world are dreams, echoes, mirages, etc. After that, in order to conclude the instruction on applying names, "Subhuti, thus, when a Bodhisattva Mahasattva practices the Perfection of Wisdom, one should train in the application of names and designations, the application of instructions, and the application of Dharmas," this was shown. In order to avoid the extremes of exaggeration and denigration, the application of names and designations was mentioned first. Abiding in that, the application of instructions was mentioned later in order to fully ripen sentient beings through teaching the Dharma. After that, it was said that these two apply names to Dharmas, thus speaking of the completely imputed Dharmas. Then, in order to show the qualities of these three applications, "Subhuti, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, practicing the Perfection of Wisdom in this way, will not truly see form as impermanent," and so on, was said. The abandonment of all conceptualization is shown as the result of learning that everything is merely an application. Eighth fascicle. The conceptualizations of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas are also of three types: the object of superior seeing, the object of the door of liberation, and the object of individually discriminating Dharmas as they truly are. Among these, the object of superior seeing is the excellence of the black and white sides due to acceptance and rejection.
