It does not exist in its own nature. Therefore, the emptiness of non-existence, that is what exists. Therefore, emptiness is not emptiness, which means that this avoids the extremes of superimposition and denigration. Therefore, the name of a Bodhisattva also does not exist by the nature of the name. The Perfection of Wisdom does not exist in the aspect of imputed phenomena, but it exists in the aspect of the completely pure realm of phenomena. The aggregates also do not exist as the nature of aggregates, but they do exist as the nature of non-aggregates, as it is taught. Again, some may have doubts about this, why is that? This is to explain the reason. What is the doubt? If all phenomena do not exist in the nature of phenomena, but exist in the nature of emptiness, then it would become a statement like "all phenomena exist." Since the statement "all phenomena exist" is sufficient, then what is the use of emptiness or anything else? To this thought, the Buddha said, "The emptiness that is the name of a Bodhisattva is not the name of a Bodhisattva." How is this explained? The name of a Bodhisattva is one thing, and emptiness is another. Therefore, because emptiness exists, one cannot say that the name of a Bodhisattva also exists. Similarly, a Bodhisattva is one thing, and emptiness is another. Therefore, because emptiness exists, one cannot say that a Bodhisattva also exists. Similarly, everything can be applied analogously. After it was taught in this way, others again have doubts: If emptiness is one thing and phenomena are another, then now the dharma nature has become something different from the dharma, and the dharma nature has also become something different from the dharma, which is unreasonable! To this thought, the Buddha said, "Apart from emptiness, there is no name of a Bodhisattva." The emptiness of the name of a Bodhisattva is not different from the name of a Bodhisattva. Therefore, dharma nature is not different from dharma, this is a concluding statement. To this, others have doubts: If emptiness is not different from phenomena, and emptiness also exists, then...

Also, one might think that such a dharma also exists. Therefore, it is said that "the name of a Bodhisattva is emptiness itself." This means that the name of a Bodhisattva, which is perfected and free from the nature of imputation, is emptiness itself. There is no other emptiness besides that. Emptiness is the name of a Bodhisattva, which is also a conclusion. In this way, the name of a Bodhisattva is used here for the nature of perfection, but not for imputation. Therefore, emptiness alone is the name of a Bodhisattva, which is the conclusion. Similarly, Bodhisattva and Bodhi should also be applied in the same way. The emptiness of a Bodhisattva is not a Bodhisattva. There is no Bodhisattva apart from emptiness. The Bodhisattva itself is emptiness. Emptiness is a Bodhisattva, and it should be applied in this way. After saying this, someone previously said that a Bodhisattva is empty of the nature of a Bodhisattva, but not empty of emptiness. If a Bodhisattva exists in the nature of emptiness, then the Bodhisattva would become existent. In response to this statement, it is said that "the emptiness of a Bodhisattva is not a Bodhisattva," meaning that the imputed Bodhisattva is different from emptiness, so there is no fault, which is the conclusion. After saying this, another person said that if dharma and dharmata are different, then dharmata would be different from dharma. In response to this statement, it is said that "there is no Bodhisattva apart from emptiness," meaning that the perfected Bodhisattva is not other than emptiness, which is the conclusion. That itself is indicated by "the Bodhisattva itself is emptiness," meaning that the Bodhisattva is emptiness. Furthermore, saying "emptiness is a Bodhisattva" is a conclusion, meaning that emptiness and the perfected Bodhisattva are not different. Similarly, everything should be applied in this way. After saying this, others became hesitant.

Urpala. Why is that? Because the reason is shown by "because". If there is not even a slight difference between a Bodhisattva and emptiness, then the Bodhisattva would become the very nature of emptiness, and it would become that there is no Bodhisattva. For that reason, like this, like this it is said that "Bodhisattva" is just a name, etc. That is exactly what I desire. Whatever you say exists, if it exists in that way, then is it a Bodhisattva? Is it the name of a Bodhisattva? Or is it something like Bodhi? All of those are not existent, because all that is conceptualized is just a name. Like this, "emptiness" is just a name, when someone thinks that emptiness exists, then that is also just conceptualization, just a name, and it is not existent in its own nature, that is what is being shown. Here too, it is not possible to ascertain, so the reason is shown by "why is that?". If those dharmas do not exist, then how could birth and cessation appear for what does not exist? How could bad destinies decrease and good destinies increase? Why is it that before it is completely afflicted, and later it becomes completely purified? Therefore, for what has no self-nature, there is no birth, no cessation, no increase, no decrease, no complete affliction, and no complete purification. If all dharmas are without self-nature, then from the name of a Bodhisattva, etc., up to the self-nature of form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, etc., those are not ultimately existent, then how could there be birth, cessation, increase, decrease, complete affliction, and complete purification for those? Like this, if one self-nature exists, then is it the self-nature of what is conceptualized? Or is it the self-nature of what is perfectly established? For that, the self-nature of what is conceptualized is completely non-existent, like illusion, etc. Just as when the form of illusion, etc., appears, there is no birth, and when it does not appear, there is no cessation, and even if it becomes one, there is no decrease.
