will become permanent. If that happens, then the so-called liberation will not be achieved. Therefore, these natures of the imputed dharmas are merely imputed, and the emptiness of all dharmas cannot be destroyed. Therefore, this is called the emptiness of all dharmas. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva thinks like this: Even if we temporarily assume that impermanence and so on are general characteristics and disappear, these are the individual characteristics of the dharmas, such as the characteristic of form being changeable, the characteristic of feeling being experience, and so on, these exist. Because these exist, form and so on also exist. Then, one determines in this way: Are these characteristics different from the bases of the characteristics? Or are they not different? If they are not different, then it itself is the characteristic, and it itself cannot be called the basis of the characteristic. If the basis of the characteristic is not established, then the characteristic is also not different from it, so it will not be established. How can it become its characteristic? If they are different, then it needs to be examined: Did the characteristic arise before the basis of the characteristic? Or did it arise later? Or did it arise simultaneously? If the characteristic arose before the basis of the characteristic, then without the basis of the characteristic, whose characteristic is it? If only the characteristic arises first without a basis, then it will also arise without a basis later. If the basis of the characteristic arose first and the characteristic arose later, then before the characteristic arose, the basis of the characteristic arose without a characteristic, why would it not be without a characteristic later? If the basis of the characteristic has already arisen without a characteristic, then when the characteristic arises later, it will become causeless, so the characteristic will not do anything. If the basis of the characteristic and the characteristic arise simultaneously, then, because it has never been seen before that the characteristic is different from the basis of the characteristic, and the basis of the characteristic is different from the characteristic, this is the characteristic, and this is the basis of the characteristic, thus distinguishing them into two.

How can the types be distinguished? Therefore, the characteristics of these imputed dharmas are also imputed, so they are not permanent and bearable in the ultimate sense. Thinking like this, this is the emptiness of self-nature. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva thinks like this: If all dharmas are without object, then there is a dharma that has become other, which is without object. If the absence of object does not exist, then the dharmas will become with object. Therefore, the absence of object exists. After thinking like this, he again determines: Here, it is not reasonable for a dharma that has become other, called the absence of object, to exist. If a dharma that has become other, called the absence of object, exists, then apart from that absence of object, an object will also exist. Therefore, the absence of object will become the nature of the object. However, because of the prohibition, that is not possible, because "that itself is the object, and that itself is the absence of object" is contradictory. If one also thinks like this, that for the absence of object, there is no object, even if one thinks like this, then because of the absence of object, the absence of object will also become non-existent. Therefore, one does not see that a dharma that has become other, called the absence of object, exists. It is only on the absence of object of the dharmas that the name "absence of object" is merely applied. Therefore, this is called the emptiness of non-apprehension. Furthermore, the Bodhisattva thinks like this: In all dharmas, the nature of non-substantiality has been taught. Therefore, the nature of all dharmas, called non-substantiality, should be measured. Therefore, because it is established as the nature of non-substantiality, the dharma called the nature of non-substantiality exists. If one thinks like this, if the dharmas are of the nature of non-substantiality, then it will be said that the dharmas do not exist. What benefit is there in thinking like this? But it is not like that. If one promises that all imputed dharmas do not exist in all aspects, then one says that those imputed dharmas themselves exist as the nature of non-substantiality.
