And, thinking that saying "unconditioned" should not be said to be "non-existent" due to the temporary impure appearance in the scriptures, it is determined again as follows: There is no dharma that has become something else called "conditioned." If it were to exist, then the very term "conditioned" would be unreasonable, because "conditioned" refers to that which is made by the gathering and assembling of causes and conditions. If a dharma called "conditioned" truly existed, then it would be made by another, but a true dharma cannot be made by anyone. Thus, because there is no dharma called "conditioned," it is therefore named by such a name because it arises from the conceptualization of children. The characteristics of the conditioned, namely arising, abiding, and ceasing, are also existent by conceptualization. Since it is said that the characteristics are existent by conceptualization, it must be ascertained that the basis of the characteristics is also existent by conceptualization. A true dharma cannot be an imputed characteristic. Even if there were a true dharma called "conditioned," it would be unreasonable for one dharma to have three characteristics. Therefore, this is the emptiness of the conditioned. Again, the Bodhisattva thinks thus: Conditioned things, because they are conditioned, will become empty, but those that are unconditioned, because they are not conditioned, are the very nature of reality. Thinking thus, it is again determined as follows: There is no dharma that has become something else called "unconditioned." The so-called "unconditioned" refers to the nature of the absence of conditioned things, but it is not truly existent. For example, space refers to the characteristic of the absence of all conditioned things, but it is not existent as a characteristic that is extremely established apart from that. Cessation by discrimination is also merely the characteristic of the absence of all conditioned dharmas. Similarly, cessation by non-discrimination is also the characteristic of the destruction of the dharmas of action. If even the Hearers' view does not consider these to be truly existent, then what need is there to mention the view of emptiness? Because realizing these as emptiness, this is called the emptiness of the unconditioned. Again, the Bodhisattva thinks thus:

This is how it is thought: If all dharmas are emptiness, then by knowing the so-called dharma that transcends the previous boundary, the so-called future dharma that is at the future boundary, and the so-called dharma that arises in the present at the middle boundary, the Buddha Bhagavan is called the all-knowing one, and the wisdom of the Buddha Bhagavan is unobstructed with respect to past time, etc., the so-called unshared Buddha-dharma, and the so-called divine eye, etc., those that belong to the three times, can also arise from the scriptures. After thinking this way, it is again determined in this way: The so-called dharma of the previous boundary, the future boundary, and the middle boundary, none of them can exist, like this. The only one dharma will not be said to be the three boundaries of future, present, and past. If it is a truly existent dharma, then it will only be said to be one. How can it be consistent with the three times? If it is said that the only one dharma becomes the future at the future boundary, becomes the present at the middle boundary, and becomes the past at the previous boundary, then in that case, it becomes one time. For example, the black thing not going to the village and coming out of the village is also one, just like it is not another. Furthermore, is this time established from dependence? Or is it self-established? If it is said to be self-established, then that is unreasonable, because it is reasonable for existing objects to be self-established, but it is unreasonable for those that do not exist. Time is also not existent, because it is of the nature of becoming objects such as an instant, a short while, a moment, a day and night, half a month and a month, a season, entering the womb, an annual cycle, time, etc., so time does not even exist for an instant. Among them, the part of past time and the part of future time are put together, and it is called a moment. Similarly, past and future are put together, and it is called day and night. Therefore, for the past, future, and present, these non-existent objects, there is no so-called self-established time. If time is established from dependence, such as depending on the past.
