Their aspects are not to be spoken of in them. Thus, whatever is the eye of Dharma-nature, etc., is called inner emptiness because it is devoid of the nature of the inner eye's place of origin, etc. Thus, having averted the grasping of inner objects as eaters and averted the grasping of outer objects as being eaten, outer emptiness is established. However, those who grasp at what is eaten, the outsiders, grasp at form, etc., as belonging to themselves. The insiders grasp at it as the nature of the object itself. Here, in order to avert the former, it is said that form is without self and without what belongs to self, sound is without self and without what belongs to self, and so on. In order to avert both, it is said that form is empty of form, sound is empty of sound, and so on, which should be combined as before. Likewise, external objects are also devoid of self and what belongs to self, and devoid of the aspects of those imputed dharmas, hence it is called outer emptiness. Thus, having eliminated the conceptualizations of eaters and what is eaten, both internal and external, now, in order to abandon the grasping of self and what belongs to self, and the conceptualization of the body, even on the body that is the nature of the collection of internal and external sources, the two are combined into one and the emptiness of inner and outer is shown. In order to abandon that view, the collection of inner and outer sources, those are also truly seen to be empty of self and what belongs to self. The abandonment of conceptualization is also established because they are empty of acting in dependence on each other, so there is no difficulty in assembling. Thus, the eye is empty of form, so meeting with it, it does not perform the function of seeing, etc., which is the word of ultimate truth. Likewise, form is empty of the eye, so it does not perform the function of acting together with it. Likewise, the ear is empty of sound, and sound is empty of the ear, so because the assembly does not perform the function, the conceptualization of the body is abandoned in the assembly. Thus, when emptiness is spoken of, the inner dharmas are empty of the outer dharmas, and the outer dharmas are also empty of the inner dharmas.

What is meant by being empty of...? It is said that the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, these inner dharmas, are empty of form, sound, smell, taste, tactile objects, and dharmas. Thus, when inner and outer dharmas are combined, there is no such thing as "self" or "belonging to self." Inner dharmas are separate from outer dharmas, and outer dharmas are separate from inner dharmas. Because there is no combination, and because it is empty in the ultimate sense, it is called the emptiness of inner and outer. Having thus correctly established the three aspects of emptiness, one thinks: Does this so-called emptiness exist in the form of a dharma? Or does it not exist? If this so-called emptiness exists, then because emptiness exists, non-emptiness must also exist, because without an opposing side, it is not appropriate to have an antidote. If non-emptiness exists, then all dharmas will become non-empty. Having thought thus, one again makes this determination: The so-called empty is nothing at all. If there were some other dharma called empty, then there would also be a dharma that is not empty. But there is no other dharma that is called empty. For example, someone sees a city of gandharvas and has the thought of a city. Then, if he examines that city well, he will not see it later, and the thought of the city will disappear, and the thought of emptiness will arise. But because the thought of emptiness has arisen, it is not permissible to say that there is some other entity called the thought of the city. Similarly, here too, one previously sees forms, etc., that are completely imputed as forms, and the thought of dharmas arises. After that, one searches completely as it is in reality, but because one does not see it as it is in reality even when searching completely, the thought of dharmas does not exist, but only the thought of emptiness arises. But because the thought of emptiness has arisen, it is not permissible to say that there is some other dharma called emptiness. Therefore, because emptiness does not exist, non-emptiness also does not exist. Because non-emptiness does not exist, emptiness also does not exist. Here, one should...
