Now, the deeds done will ripen to me. May I be transformed into an island and abide there. Thinking about what this "I" is like, first, grasping the inner dharmas of the self, such as form, feeling, etc., and contemplating, there is actually nothing that can be said to be the meaning of "I." These are merely meanings expressed in name only, names that are suddenly established. Thus, one truly sees accordingly. Therefore, inner emptiness is taught, which reveals the emptiness of the aggregates. Then, the Bodhisattva thinks, if there is no self, does the other exist or not? The meaning of what is called "other" is not truly seen accordingly, but it is truly seen accordingly as merely the sense bases. Therefore, outer emptiness is taught, which reveals the emptiness of the sense bases. Then, again, in order to well establish that meaning, the inner and outer dharmas are combined and meditated upon, and it is seen that these are merely the eighteen elements. Therefore, inner and outer emptiness is taught, which reveals the emptiness of the elements. Alternatively, the non-Buddhists say, "The profound is the self." Therefore, it is necessary to show the absence of a person-self. Those who have entered this Dharma say, "The profound is the inner sense bases." Therefore, it is necessary to show that the inner sense bases do not exist. The inner and outer emptiness of these two are separately established. Among them, the eye is empty of self and what belongs to self, the ear is empty of self and what belongs to self, etc., showing inner emptiness through the absence of a person-self. The eye is empty of eye, the ear is empty of ear, etc., showing inner emptiness through the absence of a dharma-self, both ways are explained. Among them, four kinds of conceptualizations also arise for the eye. The eye is the self, the self possesses the eye, the self dwells in the eye, and the eye dwells in the self, etc. For example, form is truly seen accordingly as the self, the self possesses form, the self dwells in form, and form dwells in the self, etc.

It is like that. Among them, the so-called "eye is self" refers to clinging to the eye as self. The so-called "self possesses the eye," "the eye exists in the self," and "the self exists in the eye" refer to clinging to the eye as belonging to the self. Among them, by truly knowing the aspect of the eye being unobtainable, abandoning those four kinds of clinging, with correct wisdom, one truly sees that the eye is empty of self and empty of what belongs to self. The same applies to the ear and so on. This is the emptiness shown through the way of the selflessness of the person. From the perspective of the selflessness of phenomena, the eye has three aspects: the eye of complete imputation, the eye of discrimination, and the eye of the nature of reality. Among them, the object of what is called the eye that is grasped by what can be said and the aspect of what is said is the eye of complete imputation. The various aspects of the eye that exist in the nature of the grasper and the grasped and appear separately are the eyes of discrimination. Being apart from what can be said and the aspect of what is said, being unspeakable, being apart from being connected with appearance, the nature that is perfected individually by self-awareness is called the eye of the nature of reality. Among them, in the phrase "the eye is empty of the eye," the "eye" refers to the eye of the nature of reality. "By the eye" refers to the eye of complete imputation and the eye of discrimination. "Empty" is a synonym for being apart. Similarly, the same should be applied to "the ear is empty of the ear" and so on. So, is the ultimate truth, which is unspeakable, not the nature of the eye? If it is the nature of the eye, then it should be able to be spoken, so why is it called the eye of the nature of reality? Although this is true, nevertheless, there is no difference in the aspect of being perfected by way of transformation in all conditioned phenomena, such as the eye and so on, and form and sound and so on. Although it is the same aspect, when it is divided in order to be fully shown, and when one wants to speak, there is no other method, so one can only separately show it with words such as "the suchness of form," "the suchness of sound," "the suchness of taste," and so on. That suchness is just that.
