Venerable One, if those are roots of virtue, why are they called afflictions? The Blessed One said: Ocean of Intelligence, it is like this, those afflictions, Bodhisattvas are afflicted in the three realms, because the three realms arise from afflictions. Therefore, Bodhisattvas, with skillful means and the power of increasing roots of virtue, intentionally become afflicted in the three realms. Therefore, it is called afflictions equal to roots of virtue, in the three realms, the mind that arises from afflictions is not truly defiled by afflictions. Ocean of Intelligence, for example, a merchant or householder has a beloved, precious, agreeable, pleasing, and only son. That child, because of his youth and ignorance, accidentally falls into a dirty cesspool while playing. Then, the child's mother, friends, and relatives see the child fall into the dirty cesspool. Having seen it, they weep sadly, wail, but do not dare to enter the dirty cesspool to rescue the only son. After that, the child's father comes, and he sees the only son fall into the dirty cesspool. Having seen it, he loves and cherishes the only son from the bottom of his heart, without scolding, but quickly and swiftly jumps into the dirty cesspool and rescues the only son. Ocean of Intelligence, this simile is made so that you may understand the meaning. What is the meaning here? Ocean of Intelligence, the so-called "dirty cesspool" is a euphemism for the three realms. The so-called "only son" is a euphemism for all sentient beings, whom Bodhisattvas regard as their only son. The so-called "mother, friends, and relatives" are euphemisms for the practitioners of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer vehicles, who, seeing sentient beings fallen into samsara, weep sadly and wail, but are unable to rescue them. The so-called "merchant or householder" is a euphemism for the Bodhisattva. Like this, the Blessed One taught that it is because Bodhisattvas are fully endowed with the nature of ripened roots of virtue.

If those transformations increase due to the power of the causes of ignorance's imprints, they will become the cause for accomplishing the body. Furthermore, the sutra says this: "Bhagavan, for example, from the cause of the proximate cause and the defiled karma, the three realms of existence arise. Bhagavan, similarly, from the cause of the ground of ignorance's imprints and the undefiled karma, the mind-made bodies of the Arhats, the Pratyekabuddhas, and the Bodhisattvas who have attained power will arise." Now, it is to be said: Is that body counted in this world, or is it counted in the other world? Is it counted in the desire realm, the form realm, or the formless realm? It is not counted in any of the beings, birthplaces, births, existences, or worlds. Then, what is that body that is manifestly accomplished like? It is born from the mind, like a mind-born emanation, but it is not an emanation of the gods themselves. Furthermore, the term "existence" is said to be designated by the power of death and birth. If those who have attained power have a transformation for the sake of sentient beings, they will appear in this or that birthplace and being. If there is no transformation for the sake of sentient beings, then the self will not appear, and death and birth are also the same. That body is the fully ripened result of the undefiled root of virtue, therefore it is conditioned, and it is also called samsara. Because it is not manifestly assembled by defiled karma and afflictions, it is also called unconditioned, and that itself is also called nirvana. Like this, Bhagavan, therefore there is both conditioned and unconditioned samsara, and there is also conditioned and unconditioned nirvana. Like this, the Tathagata, skilled in means, first makes these Shravakas into Arhats, abandoning afflictions, and then afterwards leads them onto the path of Bodhi. This is the irreversible means for the Tathagatas, the masters of the ultimate Dharma. As the Bhagavan said, the Tathagata makes the Shravakas attain the unsurpassed perfect and complete
