If one hears this without the conditions of liberation and listening, even if one hears it with only faith, it will be taken away and become wavering, this is the second case. If one asks about the ultimate teaching mentioned earlier with only faith, but without the conditions of holding it, one will later fall into the vehicle of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, this is the third case. Here, the analogy of the ocean ship, the analogy of the vase, and then the analogy of the ship and the analogy of the old man are easy to understand from the text itself. Therefore, in order to show that if one does not possess the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means, one will fall into the two vehicles, and if one possesses them, one will attain the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, the Venerable Subhuti asked how one becomes without these two, and how one does not fall without these two. At that time, the Blessed One said that due to attachment to the six perfections and the power of pride, one becomes named as not possessing them, and then one will fall from either of the two grounds. Whoever is attached to the six perfections and is without pride, that one will attain the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment, thus it was taught. For example, the Perfection of Giving is the hither shore perfection, which means that the aspect of non-discrimination in the path of the Bodhisattvas is called the hither shore perfection. The aspect of the Buddhas' omniscience is called the further shore perfection, which is the further shore of non-discrimination. Therefore, it is said that one should know both the hither shore and the further shore. After that, the explanation of skillful means is also in the same order. Having heard that those who do not possess the Perfection of Wisdom and skillful means will fall into the two vehicles, one wonders what will happen to the newly entered faithful ones? Then, one asked the Blessed One, how should the first Bodhisattva Mahasattva train in the Perfection of Wisdom? The Blessed One replied that for the first practitioners, a virtuous friend is indispensable, therefore, one should rely on a virtuous friend, thus it was taught. Do not cling to excellence.

The phrase "do not generate desire" refers to the view of discrimination. The phrase "do not long for ultimate meaning" is a warning against longing due to attachment to ultimate meaning. Then, the venerable Subhuti asked, "Is it not difficult for a Bodhisattva to seek unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment in the emptiness of the self-nature of all dharmas?" The Blessed One replied, "At that time, one should act as a benefit, happiness, protector, refuge, place, friend, island, guide, and support for the world." After stating these nine phrases, he repeated each of them individually, explaining them extensively. The intention to liberate all beings from all bonds and place them in a state of indestructibility is benefit. The intention to liberate all beings from all suffering and place them in a state of happiness is happiness. The intention to teach the Dharma to protect beings from suffering is protection. The intention to liberate suffering beings from suffering and place them in the extinction of Nirvana without aggregates is refuge. The intention to teach the Dharma to be free from attachment is a place. The intention to teach the Dharma to others through all dharmas such as form is a friend. The intention to teach the Dharma in a manner that completely cuts off all around, like an island, is an island. The intention to teach the Dharma with great compassion, leading beings to Nirvana, is guidance. In short, the intention to individually contemplate and consider the eighty-five abodes of beings is support. This is the order of the scripture. Blessed One, how are all dharmas unmixed? When do the imputed and the perfectly established, during the time of samsara, become one, existing without being separate? At that time, when these two exist without difference, it is called mixing. When, due to the cause of the extremely pure realm of Dharma and the power of conducive conditions such as hearing, thinking, and meditating, they gradually transform, and the perfectly established and the imputed become separate, existing in an extremely pure, stainless essence, then there is no mixing.
