Here, the term "utterly pure" is used because it refers to something without substance. Therefore, the Blessed One said, "Because Subhuti is without self, formlessness is utterly pure." Previously, the purity of the Prajnaparamitas was shown. Now, the purity of selflessness is shown. Subhuti, because wisdom is neither gained nor lost. It means that unprecedented wisdom is obtained and not gained, and the wisdom gained is not wasted. Therefore, since both are absent, there is no enlightenment either. What is called enlightenment is merely conceptualization. Non-duality and utter purity mean that since defilement and purification are both absent, in the past, it was naturally pure like the sky, without any defilement. Even in the state of perfect accomplishment, it is like the sky, without any unprecedented purification. Chapter 20. Having thus completely explained purity, in order to inspire deeper faith, the explanation of all-pervading infinity is begun. The phrase "because form is all-pervadingly infinite" means that it is without permanence or cessation, and without a beginning, end, or middle, and is therefore all-pervadingly infinite. Therefore, the Blessed One said, "Subhuti, because of emptiness that transcends limits, and because of emptiness that is without beginning or end." Subhuti asked: "Blessed One, for what reason is it considered that this Prajnaparamita belongs to Bodhisattvas?" Why did the Venerable Subhuti ask this? It was asked because the profound object of the Prajnaparamita is said to belong only to Bodhisattvas and not to the Buddhas. Subhuti, it is because of knowing the aspect of the path. It means that this Prajnaparamita has reached the ultimate, and it is not something that has been done, but it is the aspect of the path of the all-knowing, and therefore it is said to belong to Bodhisattvas. Blessed One, the Prajnaparamita of the Bodhisattvas, the great beings, does not focus on this shore, the other shore, or the absence of both.

If one thinks of reaching the other shore from this shore, or reaching the end of the other shore, or reaching the self-nature of the other shore, is that called reaching the other shore? Even though the wisdom perfection of the Bodhisattvas is complete, they do not dwell on this shore, nor do they dwell on the other shore, because apart from these two shores, nothing else can be seen, so it is said. This shore refers to that which belongs to conditioned phenomena. The other shore refers to that which belongs to unconditioned phenomena. After this request, the Blessed One said: Because of being extremely pure. If any shore is seen, then it will not be the nature of purity. Because there is nothing, it is extremely pure. Because of the nature of extreme purity, it is said that one does not dwell on both shores and other places. Subhuti, because of the equality of the three times. Because of the beginningless and endless emptiness, the equality of the three times is completely known, therefore there is no attachment to this shore or attachment to the other shore. Therefore, it is said that one does not dwell on this shore, nor does one dwell on the other shore. In order to deeply believe through the use of seeing and not seeing, therefore, after that, the chapters on attachment and non-attachment are separated and explained, such as: attachment to names, attachment to characteristics, and so on. To grasp at names for phenomena such as form is conceptual imputation. To grasp at characteristics for words is discrimination. Both are of the nature of obscuration, so they are called attachment. Subhuti, all dharmas are without characteristics, without names, this is showing the field of activity of the Perfection of Wisdom. Blessed One, it is wonderful that the Bodhisattvas have so well explained and well concluded the Perfection of Wisdom! This is showing the knowledge of the aspects of the path. If one thinks of form as emptiness, it is attachment, this is thinking in this way from the perspective of what can be seen. If one does not think of form as form, this is the Bodhisattva's knowledge of the aspects of the path. To all dharmas
