Because it cannot be grasped, it is ungraspable. The term "unobstructed" indicates that because there is no characteristic of being obstructed like the senses and objects, it shows that there are no objects and subjects. Thus, because there is no characteristic, it is without characteristic, and because both are without characteristic, the characteristic is one. Therefore, it is said, "Without characteristic, the characteristic is one." Subhuti, the statement "For dharmas without characteristics, there is no arising, no becoming, and no non-arising" means that the perfectly established dharma is free from all characteristics of imputation and is completely pure by nature. Therefore, because it has already arisen by nature, there is no sudden arising for it. Subhuti, the statement "Whoever desires to arise from dharmas without characteristics merely desires to arise from Suchness" and so on, extensively shows that there is no sudden arising. Suchness is not defiled by its own nature and, like space, has no arising. Therefore, Subhuti, it is said that "the essence of Suchness does not arise from the three realms." The statement "Suchness is empty of the essence of Suchness" means that if Suchness has no imputed essence of Suchness, then why would it arise from it? Suchness and so on, up to the inconceivable realm of ultimate reality, have already been discussed before. The terms "sphere of abandonment," "sphere of detachment," and "sphere of cessation" refer to Suchness as the cause of abandoning all elaborations of affliction and cognitive obscurations, hence it is called the "sphere of abandonment." It is the cause of detachment from desire for the three realms and transcends all worlds, hence it is called the "sphere of detachment." It is the cause of ceasing all suffering, hence it is called the "sphere of cessation." The five terms "name," "sign," "symbol," "convention," and "designation" summarize imputation. For example, calling the substance of a cow "cow" is a name.

Obscure language and concluding remarks, etc., are signs. Terms such as "son of Salmo," "son of Darmamo," etc., are codes. Expressions like "Lead the ox and sew the paper" are common parlance. All expressions are designations. 'Without arising,' 'without ceasing,' 'without defilement,' 'without purification,' and 'without manifestation'—these five terms, when combined, encompass complete establishment: because of being without arising, there is no arising; because of being without ceasing, there is no ceasing; because of being without contamination, there is no defilement; because of being completely pure by nature, there is no purification; because there is no manifestation as a cause of purification, there is no manifestation. Now, where will the Great Vehicle abide? This initiates the fourth question. Subhuti, that Great Vehicle does not abide anywhere. Just as the sky does not abide anywhere, so too, the Great Vehicle, having reached the ultimate and being the nature of the Dharmakaya, does not abide anywhere. Not only does the Great Vehicle not abide anywhere, but all phenomena of imputation and perfect establishment also do not abide anywhere. Because all phenomena are without abiding. Imputation does not abide anywhere because it does not exist. Perfect establishment does not abide anywhere because it has no basis or support. However, that Great Vehicle will abide in a way that does not abide, which shows that establishing a designation, that non-abiding itself is its abiding. Therefore, it is said that suchness is neither abiding nor non-abiding. Because, in terms of ultimate truth, it does not have the nature of dependence, it is not abiding. Because it abides in the nature of non-abiding, it is also not non-abiding in terms of convention. Similarly, this should be applied to all natures of abiding and non-abiding. By abiding in non-abiding and by being immovable, it does not abide anywhere, because as an object of support, it does not abide anywhere; therefore, it is called non-abiding. Abiding by the nature of non-abiding, as well as being stable and unchanging.
