Being separated from the mind of omniscience, and only meditating on emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, if one does not obtain skillful means, one will become a Shravaka or a Pratyekabuddha. This is because one clings to phenomena as real and having characteristics, and does not possess skillful means. If one does not possess the mind to attain the wisdom of all-knowingness, even if one appears to practice the three doors of liberation, one will fall into the ground of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, this is what is to be explained. Sharadvatiputra, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, not being separated from the mind of all-knowingness, meditates on emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, and having obtained skillful means, enters the Bodhisattva path without fault, and attains the unexcelled perfect and complete enlightenment. This is because the Bodhisattva possesses skillful means and a vast intention, dedicating all virtuous deeds to obtaining the wisdom of unexcelled Bodhi, all-knowingness. If one practices the three doors of liberation, with the difference of intention, one can enter the first Bodhisattva ground without fault, and attain the unexcelled perfect and complete enlightenment, this is what is to be explained. Sharadvatiputra, for example... up to falling into the ground of Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas, this is saying that if one does not possess means and wisdom, and does not possess the mind of all-knowingness, the metaphor of falling into the ground of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is taken from a bird without wings and explained. Showing the bird's body is large is an example of the great aspiration to accomplish unexcelled perfect and complete enlightenment, the great generation of Bodhicitta, and the great acceptance of the Bodhisattva's vast conduct. Showing the bird's second wing is showing the lack of both wisdom and means. Showing the suffering of being struck and injured is an example of falling from the Bodhisattva ground and falling into the ground of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Why is that? It is because the Bodhisattva...

From "If one gives alms without the mind of omniscience" to "one will fall into the ground of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas," it shows the reason why one falls into the ground of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas if one does not possess skillful means and wisdom. When practicing the six perfections, if the three spheres are not completely purified, then one practices with signs and attachments, because one is separated from the perfection of wisdom and is not completely grasped by skillful means. Therefore, it is taught that one will fall into the ground of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Sharadvatiputra, from "Bodhisattvas, past, future, and present Tathagatas" to "one will abide in the ground of the Hearers or Solitary Buddhas," it says that if one does not have skillful means and wisdom, and does not possess the mind of omniscience, even if one practices and meditates on the five uncontaminated aggregates of the Buddhas of the three times, because one does not know and realize that those aggregates have no essence in the ultimate sense, then one grasps the five uncontaminated aggregates and the three doors of liberation as the sign of peaceful nirvana, and dedicates them to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Because of clinging to signs and entities, one will abide in the ground of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Sharadvatiputra, why is that? Because one is separated from the perfection of wisdom and skillful means, and dedicating those roots of virtue to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment will certainly be so, there is no doubt about it. This is the same meaning as what was said above, and it is added that it will certainly be so. Sharadvatiputra, for this, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva, from the time of first generating the mind, is sustained by the mind of omniscience, and gives alms without being separated from the mind of omniscience, until "Sharadvatiputra, it should be known that that Bodhisattva Mahasattva will not abide in the ground of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas," it says that the Bodhisattva possesses skillful means and wisdom, is not separated from the mind of omniscience, and the uncontaminated aggregates
