Even having realized this, unlike the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, they do not become timid and do not dwell on the side of tranquility alone. Instead, with skillful means, in order to benefit sentient beings, they perfect the accumulations of merit and wisdom. After manifestly awakening to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, they also explain the profound and peaceful Dharma, which transcends the realm of conceptualization, with worldly sounds and terms. The thought of explaining it to sentient beings is something that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas cannot do, so it is shown that practicing austerities is very wonderful. Subhuti, if that is the case, does a Bodhisattva Mahasattva become an island in the world after manifestly awakening to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? What is said, such as this, shows how a Bodhisattva becomes an island in the world. Subhuti, it is like this: for example, from a river or a spring to the great ocean, whatever places are completely cut off by water, however many there are, those are called islands. This is shown by the example of becoming an island. For example, in a great river, a small stream, or a great ocean, the edge of the land suitable for sentient beings to live on, surrounded by water, is called an island. Sentient beings are carried away by the water and have no control. If they encounter such an island, they rely on it and are able to dwell there, which is called an island. Similarly, sentient beings do not realize the true meaning and wander in the ocean of Samsara. If they find the peaceful and blissful place of Nirvana, they will not wander in Samsara and, like dwelling on an island, they will reveal the profound, peaceful, and excellent Dharma of bliss, which is called becoming an island. Subhuti, similarly, the form aggregate completely cuts off the previous and later limits. This is because, from the ultimate point of view, the nature of form is not established, so it cannot be said that it arose from here before, or that the later limit will arise from here. In this way, the two limits are completely cut off, and without dwelling on either of the two limits, without dwelling in the Dharmadhatu that is separate from the two limits, teaching the Dharma by dwelling in a non-dwelling manner is called becoming an island. How is form

As explained, all aspects such as feelings should be connected to the attainment of omniscience. Subhuti, the statement "the complete cessation of the prior and subsequent limits means the complete cessation of all dharmas" indicates that the meaning of the form and other dharmas being free from the two extremes is a concise summary of what was previously stated. In short, it is taught that all dharmas are completely cut off from the two extremes because they are not established as truly existent in ultimate reality. Subhuti, the statement "whatever is the complete cessation of the prior and subsequent limits of all dharmas, that is peace, that is excellent" and so on, indicates that being free from the two extremes is itself nirvana, thus showing the different names of nirvana. "That is peace" means that all obscurations of knowledge and afflictions are completely purified. "That is excellent" means that it is free from all demons and evil influences. "That is true" means that the meaning is not mistaken and not inverted. Thus, emptiness and signlessness refer to the nirvana spoken of by the Lesser Vehicle, which, like clinging to existence, is actually not existent. "The cessation of the continuum of the path" means that one will not be reborn in the five paths of samsara. "The exhaustion of craving" means that there is no craving to take another aggregate. "Unmixed" means that it is not mixed with contaminated dharmas. "Free from desire" means that one does not cling to the objects of the three realms. "Cessation" means that all actions and afflictions cease and the continuum is cut off. "Nirvana" means that it is free from all harm to the aggregates. Subhuti, thus, after a Bodhisattva Mahasattva attains complete and perfect enlightenment, he teaches such peaceful and excellent dharmas, meaning that after a Bodhisattva truly understands all dharmas, he teaches the dharmas he has realized to sentient beings as they are, so that sentient beings may be happy in the state of nirvana.
