If any Bodhisattva-vehicle person has heard of unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment in the past, but has not fully inquired or fully examined, then when this Perfection of Wisdom is taught, they will become dull, their minds will become depressed, and their mental state will change. Up to (their mental state will change), it explains that in previous lives, they may have heard a little of this Perfection of Wisdom, but did not become familiar with it through questioning and examination. Therefore, in this life, when they hear this profound Perfection of Wisdom, they will have doubts and will not develop faith. Just as it is said about the Perfection of Wisdom, the same should be applied to understanding the aspects of the path, up to reaching unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment. Furthermore, Subhuti, if any Bodhisattva-vehicle person has heard this profound Perfection of Wisdom in the past, but has not fully inquired or fully examined it, and has not followed it for one day, two days, three days, four days, or five days, up to (has not followed it), then they only possess faith, joy, and aspiration, and are unable to inquire, read, uphold, recite, or properly contemplate this profound Perfection of Wisdom. Up to (unable to properly contemplate), it explains that some sons or daughters of good family may have heard a little of this profound Perfection of Wisdom in previous lives, but did not become familiar with it through questioning and examination. Therefore, in this life, when they hear this profound Perfection of Wisdom, their minds will not be stable, and they will listen to the advice of other bad friends, and will be unable to inquire, read, uphold, recite, or properly contemplate this profound Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, sons or daughters of good family of the Bodhisattva-vehicle do not inquire, uphold, recite, or properly contemplate this profound Perfection of Wisdom, and do not benefit others with this profound Perfection of Wisdom, up to (do not benefit others), sons or daughters of good family of the Bodhisattva-vehicle

Those daughters did not practice in accordance with this Perfection of Wisdom. Therefore, a son or daughter of the lineage of the Bodhisattva Vehicle should understand that they will abide in one of these two positions and two grounds. This passage means that some practitioners of the Bodhisattva Vehicle in their previous lives did not write this profound Perfection of Wisdom themselves, did not receive it, did not recite it, did not properly contemplate it, and did not benefit others with the Dharma of the Perfection of Wisdom, etc., up to the All-Knowingness, and did not practice in accordance with the meaning of the pure Dharma of the Perfection of Wisdom, etc., thus showing that they would fall into the state of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. The Thirty-fifth Chapter of the Extensive Explanation of the Hundred Thousand Verses on the Perfection of Wisdom is completed. Chapter Thirty-six, The Chapter on the Boat. Subhuti, for example, in the middle of the ocean there is a boat, and people... until they do not ask about or show All-Knowingness, do not recite, do not properly contemplate, and do not rely on it, those people will fall away from Bodhi in the middle and, without attaining All-Knowingness, will realize the Hearer's ground or the Solitary Buddha's ground. This passage means that just as people in the middle of the ocean in a broken boat cannot reach the shore without grasping or relying on wood, etc., so too, if a son or daughter of the lineage of the Bodhisattva Vehicle has only faith and joy in this profound Perfection of Wisdom, but does not cultivate and rely on it through writing and showing, etc., they will fall away from the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment and will fall into the Hearer's and Solitary Buddha's ground. Subhuti, if someone, a practitioner of the Bodhisattva Vehicle, has faith for the sake of realizing the Unsurpassed Perfect Enlightenment... until being completely grasped by All-Knowingness, without fault in the middle, they transcend the Hearer's ground, transcend the Solitary Buddha's ground, completely
