The Extensive Commentary on the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom. The Extensive Commentary on the Hundred Thousand Verses of the Perfection of Wisdom. Chapter Twenty-Four: The Chapter on the Enumeration of Merits. Then, the Blessed One said to Indra, the Lord of the Gods: "Kauśika, any son or daughter of good family who, if they were to establish the beings of Jambudvīpa on the path of the ten virtuous actions... up to teaching them, and those sons or daughters of good family would also awaken to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, awaken to perfect enlightenment... up to causing them to awaken to perfect enlightenment, then, one who establishes the beings of Jambudvīpa on the path of the ten virtuous actions, it is not like reading, copying, or reciting this Perfection of Wisdom, or giving it to others for the sake of (others) obtaining (this scripture), (this act) shows the benefits of great merit. Such great benefit is because through this Perfection of Wisdom, the śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and bodhisattvas of the past, present, and future, through practicing the unpolluted Dharma, such as the four mindfulnesses, etc., up to the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, thereby obtain their respective fruits, for the sake of extensively showing these (fruits). Among them, "entered into the faultless state" refers to entering (this path) in order to obtain the fruit of a śrāvaka stream-enterer. "A bodhisattva entered into the faultless state" refers to entering (this path) in order to obtain the first bhūmi of a bodhisattva. Kauśika, if one were to place a single being in the fruit of stream-entry, then the merit of that son or daughter of good family would increase even more, and it is not like establishing the beings of Jambudvīpa on the path of the ten virtuous actions... Kauśika, therefore, bodhisattvas should also be venerated and respected, and beings in the world, including gods, demons, Brahmā, and śramaṇas and brahmins, should pay homage and respect with flowers, garlands, incense, unguents, powders, clothes, umbrellas, banners, flags, and various musical instruments.

And up to the phrase, "It should be known that it is to make a sound and to make a noise," placing the beings of Jambudvipa on the path of the ten virtuous actions, the merit of placing one being on the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, and the Arhatship, is greater. Even placing all the beings of Jambudvipa on the four fruits, such as stream-entry, is less meritorious than placing one being on self-enlightenment. Even placing all the beings of Jambudvipa on self-enlightenment, the merit of placing one being on unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment is greater, and this is shown with reasoning. The reasoning is that placing one being on unsurpassed enlightenment will ensure that the lineage of the Buddha's Dharma will not be cut off. It will not be so if the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are placed on their respective fruits. Moreover, the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Tathagatas also arise from Bodhisattvas, and that is why it is taught. Kausika, whatever son or daughter of good family who places all the beings of Jambudvipa on the path of the ten virtuous actions, Kausika, what do you think? Up to the phrase, "The Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfect Buddhas exist," placing all the beings of Jambudvipa on the path of the ten virtuous actions, as well as the beings of the four continents, the beings of a thousand worlds, the beings of two thousand worlds, the beings of the three thousand great thousand worlds, and in each of the ten directions, in worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, whatever beings there are, the merit of placing all of them on the path of the ten virtuous actions is less than giving this Prajnaparamita to others for the sake of reading, writing, or reciting it. The merit is greater, and this is shown with reasoning. The reasoning is that this Prajnaparamita is the undefiled Dharma.
